Manchester United executive gives uncertain update on Bruno Fernandes future
Bruno Fernandes just set the Premier League record for assists in a single season, but now there is a bit of worry surrounding the future of the midfielder.
Bruno Fernandes was one of the principal reasons that Manchester United turned their season around and finished in the top three of the Premier League. After a promising finish to the season and high hopes for the future, the Portuguese wizard could be leaving Old Trafford this summer, according to the United chief executive.
“Like to see him stay”
Omar Berrada, the Manchester United chief executive, left the door cracked for Fernandes to make a summer exit by not ruling out a transfer of their play making midfielder. While there message did suggest that United are keen on keeping the single season assist record holder in the Premier League there was a tone of uncertainty in his answer.
When speaking to the Inside Carrington podcast, Berrada said, “We’d like him to stay, of course we do. He’s had a great season on the pitch but more importantly he’s shown to everybody that he is a great leader. People don’t see what he does outside of the pitch. He understands the values of the club really well and I think we’ve seen him help a lot of the younger signings.”
The response seemed to put the ball in Fernandes’ court. While the United captain has expressed his desire stay at the club and battle for titles, there have been moments of deception with the club. A while back he did says that he felt undervalued at the club which disappointed him because the “have nothing to criticize me for.”
Will he stay or will he go?
Fernandes stuck it out at the Theater of Dreams, and while the titles have alluded him and United, the Portuguese genius is coming off of a season in which he broke the assist record with 21 goals. Under Michael Carrick things changed, and United looked like a team that could contend with the top clubs in the league. That will certainly be a bonus point this summer considering Fernandes statements to ESPN after his comments about his value in the club. “My goal has always been to win the biggest competitions and the Premier League is part of it. And I still have that dream in me and I hope to achieve it,” said Fernandes.
The United captain is on the books until his contract runs out in 2027, and there could be some offers that might try and lure Fernandes out of Manchester. Considering the financial state of the club following the Glazers reign, a big money bid for the midfielder could be something that United consider.
When speaking about the financial situation within the club, Berrada said, “It is true that the cost was very high for many people and it’s taken a while for the club to build back that trust between staff, management, owners. I think we’re in a much better place now and as we have seen in the latest financial results, those tough decisions have borne their fruit in the sense that it’s allowed the club to be where it needs to be moving forwards.”
