Two Mexico stars rank among football’s elite
Two Mexican players figure among the stars of world football thanks to their outstanding performances this summer.
The Mexican national team’s 2026 World Cup campaign did not end as fans had hoped. Their performances in the group stage and the first knockout round raised expectations across the country, but a ruthless England side ultimately brought the dream to an end. Still, there were plenty of positives to take away.
The performances of several El Tri players sent a clear message: Mexico has more than enough quality. In fact, two members of Javier Aguirre’s squad now rank among the world’s statistical standouts.
Julián Quiñones was one of the revelations of the tournament. La Pantera established himself as one of Mexico’s key players thanks to his clinical finishing. His four goals in five matches placed him among the World Cup’s leading scorers. The Al-Qadsiah forward finished ninth in the scoring charts, behind stars such as Vinicius Junior and world champion Mikel Oyarzabal.
Roberto Alvarado was the other driving force behind El Tri’s attack. El Piojo’s performances did not go unnoticed. Operating from the right flank, he consistently took on defenders and provided Mexico’s greatest attacking threat. His numbers back that up: three assists and four big chances created, making him the tournament’s seventh-most productive creator. Alvarado shares that ranking with stars such as Nuno Mendes and Joshua Kimmich, and even finishes ahead of Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham.
Despite the exposure both players gained at the World Cup, neither appears set for an immediate move. Quiñones has been linked with the Premier League, but Al-Qadsiah have made their stance clear. Following his recent contract extension, they are in no rush to part with their star forward.
Meanwhile, Alvarado appears settled at Chivas. His age, combined with a significant asking price, is likely to make a move to Europe difficult. For now, Mexican fans will continue to enjoy his talent on home soil.
