Manchester United player charged and banned after homophobic slur
The Manchester United youngster has been charged by the FA for an anti-gay slur.
Manchester United academy midfielder Jack Fletcher has publicly apologised after being charged by the Football Association for using a homophobic slur during an Under-21 match late last year.
The incident happened in October during an EFL Trophy tie against Barnsley, when Fletcher directed the term “gay boy” at an opponent, which was heard by referee Will Davis, who was around one yard away from the incident.
The exact context, according to the FA’s written reasons, was a heated exchange between players during the contest at Oakwell: Fletcher was sent off on the day and later admitted to an “aggravated breach” of FA disciplinary rules that cover discriminatory language.
“Gay boy” slur a “momentary lapse of character”
In February, a regulatory commission handed him a six-match suspension, a £1,500 fine, and an education order; he must now complete face-to-face courses on discriminatory conduct or risk further sanctions.
In a statement on the club’s official channels, Fletcher said he was “truly sorry” for his choice of words.
Despite using the term, he claims he “had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult” yet “completely understand[s] that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game.”
He called it a “momentary lapse of character” that “absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values.”
The club added that “Manchester United has worked with Jack to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language, and why it is harmful. In addition to his ongoing participation in regular Academy programmes on diversity and inclusion, Jack will also take part in educational training through the FA.”
This scandal comes in the wake of Manchester United owner Jim Ratcliffe commenting that the UK has been “colonised by immigrants”, sparking fury among fans and the media, who rightly point out that Ratcliffe has been an immigrant in tax haven Monaco since 2020.
