Maple, Zayu, and Clutch: these are the mascots of the 2026 World Cup and what each one represents
Back in September, FIFA unveiled the three mascots who will represent each of the nations hosting this summer’s event.
Mascots are an essential part of any World Cup, and this year’s tournament celebrates the 60th year since the first one was unveiled at the summer showpiece.
World Cup Willie, an anthropomorphic, football-crazy lion was the competition’s first mascot at England 1966. He set a trend and other memorable ones followed - such as Juanito at Mexico 70 and Naranjito, a soccer-mad orange at Spain 82.
Along with special edition jerseys, the official match ball and the theme song, mascots help shape the identity of each World Cup. This will be 16th consecutive tournament to feature mascots.
Meet the 2026 World Cup mascots
In September, FIFA unvieled the three official mascots for the 2026 edition: Maple, Zayu, and Clutch — three characters representing the host nations in what will be the first World Cup ever staged across three different countries. Fans will see them greeting crowds and hyping up stadiums from June 11 to July 19.
Maple, representing Canada, is a moose — one of the country’s most iconic animals. Dressed in red to echo the Canadian flag and the maple leaf that inspired the character’s name, Maple embodies the spirit of the northern host. “A street style-loving artist, music enthusiast and dedicated goalkeeper, Maple found purpose through creativity, resilience and unapologetic individuality”.
Mexico’s mascot is Zayu, a jaguar chosen to highlight the country’s rich natural heritage and cultural energy. According to FIFA, the jaguar symbolizes Mexico’s “heritage and dynamism.” Mexico is home to one of the largest jaguar populations in Latin America, second only to Brazil, making the species a fitting national symbol. FIFA adds that the name Zayu conveys ideas of unity, strength, and joy. “More than an athlete, Zayu is a symbol of cultural celebration and connection, carrying the heart of Mexico with pride”.
The United States mascot is Clutch, a bald eagle — a powerful national emblem featured prominently on the Great Seal of the United States. In American sports, the word “clutch” is used to describe a player or moment that delivers under intense pressure, especially in the final minutes of a game. It’s a name that captures both the bird’s symbolism and the competitive spirit of American sports culture. “Fearless on the pitch and uplifting off it, Clutch leads by action — rallying teammates, lifting spirits and turning every challenge into an opportunity to rise higher".
