Maradona daughter pushes for justice as trial date looms
An Argentinian court has confirmed charges of homicide by negligence against Maradona’s medical team.
Diego Maradona, the legendary footballer of Napoli, Barcelona who led his Argentina to the top of the world in 1986, died of a heart attack on 25 November 2020 at the age of 60. It happened at a rented residence outside Buenos Aires, following brain surgery just two weeks earlier. And despite the fact that the autopsy pointed to natural causes, his daughter Dalma has taken to social media to highlight that the family is striving for justice.
“Often the process can be painful and slow, but here we are and we’ll not stop until justice is done,” she wrote on Instagram. “Everyone who stopped doing their job (whether at someone’s request or because of ineffectiveness) will be judged for that!”
Medical staff on trial over Maradona death
An Argentine court has determined that eight medical personnel will go on trial for the death of the footballing legend. Those who treated Maradona, including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Daz, doctors Nancy Forlini and Pedro Di Spagna, nursing coordinator Mariano Perroni, and nurses Ricardo Almirón and Dahiana Madrid, were all charged with homicide by negligence. Although a trial date has not yet been established, the court estimates that it won’t start before next year.
Maradona could have survived if he had been properly treated, according to a medical board’s study that was earlier provided to the prosecution. The report indicated that Maradona did not receive the right care, suffered for more than 12 hours, and could have been saved.
