Martín Barragán, the other Mexican goalscorer few are talking about
Henry Martin is in the limelight thanks to the scoring streak he’s enjoying with America, but there is another Mexican soccer player who is also on form in Liga MX.
Everyone is talking about the goalscoring sweet spell that Henry Martin is enjoying with Liga MX side América, which has him at the top of the Apertura 2022 scoring table.
But, beyond the excitment generated by the Eagles player, there is another Mexican who, far more quietly, is also fighting to head up the scoring charts in Liga MX.
His name is Martín Barragán, striker for Puebla, who this Friday, against FC Juárez, scored his fifth goal in eleven games in the 2022 Apertura.
With his goal against the Bravos, Martín caught up with Argentine Nicolás Ibáñez (Pachuca) and Uruguayan Abel Hernández (Atlético San Luis) in second place in the tournament’s scorers table, which is headed by Henry Martin, who has bagged seven goals.
Experience of Barragán
Barragán is far from a rookie. At 31 years of age, he has a long track record that has seen him playing for a number of teams, including in the Expansion League.
The man born in Tizapán el Alto, Jalisco, made his debut in Liga MX with Atlas, on January 4, 2014, in a game against Xolos.
His first goal in the First Division would come that season, the Clausura 2014, in the 2-1 defeat of the Foxes against América.
In 2017, Martín left Atlas to become a Necaxa player, where he stayed for the next two years.
In the 2019 Apertura, he arrived at Pumas, where he only played four league games.
For Guardianes 2020, Barragán returned to Necaxa for a second stage, but for Apertura 2021 he was transferred to Atlético Morelia, in Liga Expansión.
The attacker from Guadalajara has been wearing the Puebla jersey since Clausura 2022. In that first season, he participated in 10 games, but only scored two goals.
In the current tournament, he has seen action in the 11 games that La Franja has played and he has now scored five goals.
Martín Barragán’s best seasons
With his five goals in this Apertura 2022, Martín has already equaled his personal record for the most goals in a tournament with six matches remaining in the regular phase.
In the Apertura 2016 and Clausura 2017, both with Atlas, the striker recorded five goals, the same he already has today with La Franja.
In the 2021 Apertura, Barragán scored eight goals, but he did it in the Expansion League, with Morelia, not in Liga MX.
