On Thursday it was confirmed that the Los Angeles Football Club reached an agreement with Club América to permanently transfer Brian Rodríguez. Even though it was not confirmed the total amount of the transfer, it is speculated that the Liga MX side had to pay around $6 million for the Uruguayan international, opening up a designated player position for LAFC.

Rodríguez was not happy with the role, nor the minutes played, that he was given this season at LAFC under manager Steve Cherurndolo. In 14 appearances this season the 22-year-old started 10 games and came on as a substitute in four. The Uruguayan has been worried that the lack of playing time could affect a possible call-up to the national team for the World Cup and he was no longer happy at LAFC.

When will Tello make his debut?

Rodríguez’s departure opened up an opportunity for LAFC to sign La Masia Youth Academy product Cristian Tello, who will occupy an international roster slot once his P-1 Visa and International Certificate arrives. The 31-year-old arrives in MLS as a free agent after not renewing his contract with La Liga side Real Betis.

Tello signed a contract through the 2022 MLS campaign and LAFC will have the option to renew it in 2023 and 2024. The one-time Spanish international could make his debut on 31 August against the Houston Dynamo at PNC Stadium or on 4 September when LAFC hosts Real Salt Lake at Banc of California Stadium.
