Since the Copa América final, where he was injured in the first half, Lionel Messi has been absent from Inter Miami. The World Cup winner continues to train separately from the team, and a date for his return to action remains uncertain.

During a press conference before the Leagues Cup Round of 16 match, coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino was asked about the potential return of the Argentine star, who has yet to participate in the Leagues Cup. All indications suggest that Messi will not feature in the tournament.

‘No precise date’ for Messi return, says Martino

Martino recognised Messi’s immense value to the team and is eager to have him back as soon as possible. However, he refrained from setting a specific timeline for Messi’s return.

“Leo is progressing as expected, but there’s still no precise date for when he might rejoin the group. He continues to work separately,” Martino told the media.

Leo’s absence affects us in different ways. At times, his absence is compounded by the absence of other key players. But even when it’s just him missing, it’s a significant factor. We’ve aimed to build not only a competitive team but also a competitive squad. When everyone is available, we are much more reliable and capable of truly competing. Our priority is to resolve the situation with Leo as quickly as possible while maintaining our competitiveness in his absence.”

Tata Martino also expressed strong support for the club’s young players, who have been instrumental in Inter Miami’s remarkable season, the best in MLS so far. Standout performers under the age of 25 include Diego Gómez, Federico Redondo, Benjamin Cremaschi, and Marcelo Weigandt. Martino has fully trusted these young talents to play their A game, alongside the experienced players.

Inter Miami is not just about Busquets, Alba, and Suárez. We have many young players, and the truth is that the influence of not only Leo but also the three veterans mentioned is crucial for the growth of these young players,” added Martino.

When asked about the arrival of stars like Olivier Giroud and Marco Reus to MLS, Martino emphasised that “it’s not new for the league to attract big names, but I’m more focused on our young players because I believe they are the most important asset the league has.”
