Mascherano’s rejection at Inter Miami

After two matches played by Inter Miami in 2025, there’s one player who seems to have fallen out of favor with coach Javier Mascherano for the upcoming MLS season.

The player in question was a regular under previous coach Tata Martino, but with the arrival of new signings and Mascherano as the head coach, he now appears to have no clear role in the squad.

Julian Gressel was a guaranteed starter during Martino’s tenure with the Herons, yet on Saturday he wasn’t even named in the matchday squad against New York City FC.

Gressel, who played 2,940 minutes across all competitions last season for Inter Miami, could now potentially be traded to another club following the signing of Tadeo Allende.

Callender place at risk?

Another key player during Martino’s tenure at Miami was Drake Callender, who is currently recovering from an injury he sustained while on international duty with the United States. However, Callender’s starting spot could also be under threat.

The contract renewal of Óscar Ustari and the arrival of Argentine goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo suggest that Callender’s future between the posts for Inter Miami is uncertain.

Despite this, Mascherano made it clear that the team’s leaders remain unchanged from last season – Messi and Callender – which implies that Callender could still play a pivotal role.
