Update:

Mexican teams will continue their strangle-hold on the Concacaf Champions Cup, with an all-Liga MX match-up set for this year’s final. Toluca will take on Tigres in a single-legged final after both Liga MX sides triumphed over MLS opponents in their semi-finals.

On Tuesday night Tigres eased past Nashville with a 2-0 aggregate victory, winning both legs by a single goal. LAFC gave Toluca a scare in the other semi-final, beating the Mexican giants 2-1 in the first leg to leave themselves with a real chance of progressing to the final. But they ran out of steam in the second leg and fell to a 4-0 loss on the night, having gone down to ten men after a late red card for Ryan Porteous.

Those results ensure that a Mexican team will be crowned continental champions, continuing a staggering run of success. Liga MX teams have won 19 of the past 20 editions of the Concacaf tournament, the only exception being the Seattle Sounders’ triumph in 2022.

When is the Concacaf Champions Cup final?

The game will be played on Saturday, May 30, the same date as Europe’s Champions League final. The location for the game has not yet been confirmed but hosting rights are generally awarded to the team with the best record throughout that year’s tournament.

Toluca have won more games in this year’s competition than any other team and look set to host the final at Estadio Nemesio Díez. The winner will also win a guaranteed qualification spot at the next edition of the FIFA Club World Cup in 2029.

That date will cause problems for some players, with the Toluca duo Alexis Vega and Jesus Gallardo likely to be with the Mexican national team ahead of the World Cup. This week Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre issued an ultimatum to players, insisting that they join up with the team for the pre-tournament camp instead of playing with their club teams.
