Ciudad de México Update:

Mexico have already confirmed their opponents for FIFA international window in September. The Mexican FA announced that El Tri will face Japan and South Korea.

The first game will be staged at Alameda County Stadium in Oakland, California, on Saturday 6 September. The second match is scheduled for Tuesday 9 September, with the venue still to be confirmed.

It will be the first time in five years that Mexico and Japan have met on the pitch. In November 2020, they played a friendly match, which the Tricolor won 2-0 with goals from Raúl Jiménez and Hirving Lozano. In terms of official matches, their last meeting dates back to the 2013 Confederations Cup; Mexico won with a brace from Javier Hernández.

The Mexican Football Federation and Soccer United Marketing (SUM) announced today that the Mexican Men’s National Team will host two of the best teams in Asia, Japan and Korea Republic, in September on their way to the 2026 FIFA World Cup,’ reads the statement shared by the Mexican National Team.

On the aforementioned FIFA date in November they also faced South Korea. They won 3-2, with goals from Raúl Jiménez, Uriel Antuna and Carlos Salcedo. In terms of official duels, the two teams met on the second day of the group stage of the Russia 2018 World Cup. Carlos Vela and ‘Chicharito’ gave the Tricolor the win.

Mexico’s national team will have a busy summer with the Gold Cup. They open on 14 June against the Dominican Republic, then face Suriname on the 18th and on the 22nd they meet Miguel Herrera’s Costa Rica. Before the tournament, they will play a series of friendlies against Switzerland and Turkey, teams that did well at last year’s Euro 2024.

With the World Cup just around the corner, El Tri will avail of every opportunity to prepare in the best possible way and not repeat the fiasco of Qatar 2022.
