Mexico wonderkid’s sights set on Spain
After sparkling in Mexico’s opening draw with Brazil at the U-20 World Cup, Gilberto Mora is now out to put Spain to the sword.
Gilberto Mora will be Mexico’s biggest threat to Spain in tomorrow’s match. He’s just 16 years old, but the Mexican attacking midfielder is already the standout star of his national team - and he’s no stranger to top-level competition. Mora played a key role in Mexico’s senior squad that won the Gold Cup, starting the final. That victory made history, as he became the youngest player ever to win a major title with a senior national team, surpassing both Lamine Yamal and Pelé.
Mora impresses in opener against Brazil
In his debut at the U-20 World Cup, Mora took charge of the Mexican side against powerhouse Brazil and was instrumental in securing a draw. Against the Seleção, he completed 90% of his passes and created five scoring chances. He capped off his stellar performance with a late assist, delivering a pinpoint corner that Diego Ochoa headed home with authority.
Mora is one of the most precocious talents to emerge in recent years. At Tijuana, his club in Mexico, he’s been rewriting the record books. He made his first-team debut at just 15, providing an assist, and has since become a regular starter and one of the squad’s top performers. In this World Cup in Chile, he’s among the tournament’s brightest stars - and one of the few with senior national team experience.
Mexico face struggling Spain
For Spain’s U-20s, tomorrow’s match is nothing short of a final. The loss to Morocco has complicated their path to the next round, and they’ll need a win against Mexico to stay alive. Paco Gallardo’s squad faces a tough challenge: Mexico is a powerhouse at this level, and with Mora on the pitch, they have a player capable of turning the game on its head.
