If Jaime Lozano’s team makes it out of Group B, they will likely face Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the quarter-finals or semi-finals.

The Mexico national team now know which teams they will be facing in the group stage of the Copa América 2024 after Thursday’s draw in Miami. Jaime Lozano’s side are the top seeds in Group B, where they will take on Venezuela, Ecuador and Jamaica at three different venues in the United States.

Mexico’s Copa América 2024 group stage fixture

Copa América 2024 Group B

  • Matchday 1 - Mexico vs Jamaica - NRG Stadium (Houston) - 22 June 2024
  • Matchday 2 - Venezuela vs Mexico - SoFi Stadium (Inglewood) - 26 June 2024
  • Matchday 3 - Mexico vs Ecuador - State Farm Stadium (Glendale) - 30 June 2024

Who could Mexico play in the Copa América 2024 quarter-finals?

The top two teams from each group qualify for the quarter-finals, with Group B paired in that round with Group A. That means Mexico will face one of Argentina, Peru, Chile and either Canada or Trinidad and Tobago if they manage to finish in the two top, with the winner of each group facing the runner-up in the other. Presumably, avoiding a last-eight clash with Lionel Messi and Co, the current World Cup holders, will be the main priority.

The bad news is if they do manage to avoid La Albiceleste in the last eight, there is a more than reasonable chance of the teams running into other in the semi-finals.

Venezuela and Jamaica familiar Copa América foes

Mexico were already drawn in the same group as both Venezuela and Jamaica the last time the Copa América was played in the United States in 2016. On that occasion, El Tricolor defeated the Reggae Boyz 2-0 in their second group game and then drew 1-1 with La Vinotinto in the last of them on the way to winning their section with seven points from three matches. They had previously kicked off the tournament by beating Uruguay 3-1.

How many times have Mexico played in the Copa América? What is their best result?

2024 will see the Mexicans take part in the competition for the 11th time in their history and they will be looking to go one better than their previous Copa América bests. They reached the final in both 1993 and 2001 but lost to Argentina and Colombia respectively.

The latest edition of CONMEBOL’s top international soccer tournament will be a key part of Mexico’s preparation for the 2026 World Cup, which they will host along with the United States and Canada.
