The countdown to Copa America 2024 has begun. The imposing James L. Knight Convention Center was decorated in football colours for the draw that set up the fate of the 16 teams that will compete for the 48th edition of the famous trophy. This time, the tournament can boast a total of ten World Cup stars from its participants; Argentina, Mexico, the United States and Brazil will lead the way as group winners.

For several days now, Miami has been welcoming the legends of the sport. With Fifa President Gianni Infantino in the front row, Ronaldinho, Diego Godín, Lionel Scaloni, Jorge Campos and Javier Zanetti paraded around the stage. The ceremony was conducted in English and Spanish for the tournament co-organised by both CONMEBOL and CONCACAF.

How many matches will be played at the Copa América 2024?

Alejandro Dominguez, president of CONMEBOL, opened the event by inviting Gianni Infantino to the stage. “Today is a day of celebration. We are here to change soccer in this country, to celebrate the party of soccer,” he said. “We love this game, our motto is ‘football first’ (...) This is an opportunity to expand our role and our competitions,” added Victor Montagliani, president of CONCACAF.

The Copa América will take place in 14 U.S. cities between June 20 and July 14, 2024; there will be 32 matches in 25 days of the competition. The draw saw that Argentina’s opponent for the opening match at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta will be the winner of the match between Canada and Trinidad and Tobago.

Copa América 2024 groups:

  • Grupo A: Argentina, Peru, Chile, CONCACAF 5 (Canada or Trinidad & Tobago).
  • Grupo B: Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, Jamaica.
  • Grupo C: USA, Uruguay, Panama, Bolivia.
  • Grupo D: Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, CONCACAF 6 (Honduras or Costa Rica).

What are the dates for the Copa América 2024?

The group stage will run from June 20 to July 2, the quarter-finals from July 4 to 6 and the semi-finals on July 9 and 10. The third-place game will be played on July 13 and the final will take place on July 14 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Tournament mascot revealed

During the ceremony, the organisation also unveiled the tournament mascot: an eagle named CAPITÁN. “It represents the unique fusion between the South American passion for soccer and the vibrant American atmosphere. The daughter of a Latin mother and an American father, CAPITÁN invites us to celebrate the cultural diversity of South America and the U.S.,” they said in a statement. The ball will be the PUMA Cumbre.

Rules
