Mexico’s World Cup legacy: A century of goals, heartbreak, and historic firsts
Mexico’s national team is getting ready to play its 18th World Cup. Only one nation, Brazil, has participated in more editions.
Mexico is gearing up for its 18th World Cup appearance, making El Tri the second‑most frequent participant in tournament history — trailing only Brazil, the lone nation that has never missed a World Cup.
Under Javier Aguirre, Mexico will kick off its 2026 campaign against South Africa at Mexico City’s Estadio de la Ciudad de México, hoping to keep boosting its all‑time scoring tally on soccer’s biggest stage.
Mexico’s early World Cup chapters
Mexico debuted at the 1930 World Cup, playing its first‑ever match against France. In that game, Juan Carreño Lara scored Mexico’s first World Cup goal in the 70th minute.
In their final match of that tournament, Mexico put three goals past Argentina, though they ultimately fell 6–3.
Mexico skipped the 1934 and 1938 editions — choosing not to attend the first and failing to qualify for the second.
Building a scoring history
- Uruguay 1930: 3 goals. Mexico's World Cup debut against France. Juan Carreño Lara scores Mexico's first World Cup goal
- Brazil 1950: 2 goals
- Switzerland 1954: 2 goals
- Sweden 1958: 1 goal, but Mexico earned its first‑ever World Cup point in a draw vs. Wales
- Chile 1962: 3 goals and Mexico’s first World Cup victory, against Czechoslovakia
- England 1966: 1 goal
- Mexico 1970: 5 goals, breaking their previous scoring record
After missing Germany 1974, Mexico returned in Argentina 1978, scoring just one goal before failing to qualify for Spain 1982.
A modern era of consistency
From USA 1994 through Germany 2006, Mexico scored 21 goals, with France 1998 standing out as their most prolific tournament ever — 8 goals.
From South Africa 2010 through Qatar 2022, Mexico added 14 more goals.
In total, El Tri has scored 62 World Cup goals across all tournaments played.
