The MLS vs. Liga MX showdown in the 2025 Leagues Cup is living up to the hype—tight, intense, and just a little lopsided in favor of the American sides.

After two rounds of group-stage action, MLS clubs have carved out a slim edge over their Mexican rivals, racking up 13 wins compared to Liga MX’s 10. In total, 36 matches have been played so far, with MLS teams holding both more victories and fewer early eliminations.

Cruz Azul’s League Cup humiliation

As for the most eye-catching result, the Seattle Sounders’ 7–0 demolition of Cruz Azul has been the biggest blowout of the tournament so far. Seattle and the Portland Timbers currently lead the way for MLS, each sitting on six points.

Liga MX’s top performers include Tigres and FC Juárez. Juárez, the surprise story from the Mexican side of the bracket, has a win, a draw, and an extra point earned from a penalty shootout victory. Tigres, meanwhile, are riding the “Correa effect” to two straight wins.

Liga MX dominates in penalty shootouts

While penalty kicks have long been a sore spot for Mexican soccer in international play, it’s a different story here. Of the 13 shootouts held so far in the 2025 Leagues Cup, Liga MX teams have won 10, compared to just three for MLS.
