Mohamed, 90 minutes away from changing history

If Toluca can overturn the one-goal deficit in tonight’s final, to win the back-to-back championships, Mohamed will toast his fourth title.

Ciudad de México Update:

This evening, the champion of the Apertura 2025 tournament will be crowned as Toluca’s Red Devils host Tigres UANL at Estadio Nemesio Diez.

Tigres arrive with a slim advantage after winning the first leg, while Toluca is chasing history. The “scarlet” side is aiming to become just the fourth team in Mexican soccer to win back-to-back titles in the short-tournament era. That milestone would also mark a personal achievement for head coach Antonio “Turco” Mohamed, who is chasing his own record.

Mohamed’s most successful stint yet

Mohamed is one of the most decorated managers in Liga MX, having lifted trophies with multiple clubs. He’s also known for his relatively short stints at each stop. But with Toluca, he’s already matched the most titles he’s ever won with a single team—a record that previously belonged to his time with Monterrey.

With the “choriceros,” Mohamed has already captured the Clausura 2025, the Campeón de Campeones, and the Campeones Cup. By comparison, his run with Monterrey included the Apertura 2019 and two Copa MX titles. If Toluca can overturn Tigres’ lead, the club would officially become the most successful chapter of Mohamed’s career—a remarkable feat considering he only took charge in January 2025.

Between the two Liga MX tournaments and the Leagues Cup, this is the overwhelming dominance reflected in their numbers:

  1. 50 games
  2. 31 victories
  3. 11 draws
  4. 8 defeats

Rivals and records

During this stretch, Club América has been Mohamed’s most frequent victim, with Toluca defeating the “Águilas” three times in five meetings. On the flip side, Monterrey and Tigres have proven the toughest opponents, each handing Toluca two losses under Mohamed’s tenure.
