More Chivas disappointment since last championship title
Since they were crowned champions in the Clausura 2017, they have not been able to return to a Mexican final to give the fans something to cheer since.
Chivas added a new disappointment in Mexican soccer, after being eliminated in the playoff of the Apertura 2022, saying goodbye to the tournament following a thrilling penalty shootout against Puebla. That means that since the last title they won, in the hand of Matías Almeyda, they have not been able to return to the important places in the nation’s game.
Chivas success a more distant memory
The Apertura 2017, Clausura 2018, Apertura 2019 and Clausura 2019 tournaments marked a very difficult period for the Rebaño Sagrado, as they failed to reach the Liguilla by getting into the top eight, in the previous format.
In the Apertura 2020 their was a feeling that things may improve, since the playoff phase was established, but they were eliminated at the semi-final stage by León, who went on to became champions by defeating the Pumas in the Final.
The following tournament was then hit by the covid 19 pandemic, so Clausura 2020 was canceled early; however, the action was back underway a few months later to allow for the 2021 Apertura, a tournament in which the Rojiblancos pushed to finish top of the standings but failing to do so, entering the playoffs again before being seen off by La Franja del Puebla.
Chivas tried again to compete for the Clausura 2022 title where they reached the playoff stage, and had their fans dreaming after eliminating the UNAM Pumas to set up a clash with Atlas in the Clásico Tapatío in the quarter-finals. It was to be their last involvement as the Foxes advanced to later be crowned with the Bichampionship.
This is the growing tale of how Chivas has struggled to get close to a much sought after title, five years on without reaching even a final. All since Matías Almeyda left the club.
