Newcastle tasted sweet revenge against Manchester United, beating them by 2 goals to nil at St James’ Park in another eventful day in the Premier League. It wasn’t the League Cup final this time, where the skill and class of Manchester United proved too much for the surprise package of the season, but it was an afternoon in which Eddie Howe landed a strong punch on Ten Hag’s chin, letting him and his side know that Newcastle are still in the fight for third and one of the coveted Champions League spots.

Newcastle should have been 2 up early on, were it not for David De Gea heroics around the fifteen-minute mark. An Isak header and the Willock rebound were both saved in dramatic fashion; twenty minutes later, Longstaff’s long-range effort whizzed wide. Newcastle had Manchester United on the ropes.

Newcastle second half style turned chances into goals

Chances for the home side kept coming, with Saint-Maximin the main provider. A great touch from Alexander Isak to control a long ball allowed the winger to drive forward and push Dalot back, before sending a pass across towards Willock, who had the perfect opportunity to score from inside the box; if only he hadn’t fired wildly over the bar.

The second half was the same story as the first, only with one crucial difference: Newcastle’s chances turned into goals. The first came off the head of Willock, who tapped in after great work from Isak, Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimarães, who all combined to pull the Manchester defence apart like a piñata.

A Euro dream for Eddie Howe’s team?

Joelinton’s header was saved onto the crossbar from a corner before Manchester United launched a spirited counter attack that was crowded out by black and white stripes. And then, minutes before the final whistle, Callum Wilson sentenced Ten Hag’s side to defeat with a fine header from a free-kick.

Newcastle 2-0 Casemiro-less Manchester United and the team from England’s north-east move one step closer to their European dream.
