Official: Mario Gila to AC Milan with Real Madrid earning a share of the proceeds

Respecting every deadline on its summer calendar, AC Milan has added a second signing for new manager Ruben Amorim, following the arrival of Gonçalo Ramos. The club, owned by Gerry Cardinale, has now officially announced the signing of defender Mario Gila.

A long‑planned move finally completed

Gila had already been on Milan’s radar back when Massimiliano Allegri was expected to take over and Igli Tare was set to run sporting operations. Amorim’s approval simply allowed the club to push forward with a transfer that had been in motion for months.

Reaching an agreement with the player was the easy part. From the very first conversation, Milan outmaneuvered Napoli and Atalanta. The Spanish center back accepted a five‑year deal running through June 2031, worth roughly $4.9 million per season.

Negotiations with Lazio were trickier. Under the terms of Gila’s original move to Serie A in 2022, Lazio must send 50% of the fixed transfer fee to Real Madrid. That clause shaped every step of the talks.

The final price: $30.3 million

Lazio initially rejected Milan’s offer of €25 million plus €2 million in bonuses (about $27.2 million plus $2.2 million). But club president Claudio Lotito eventually accepted Milan’s improved bid: €28 million total (about $30.3 million). Roughly €10 million (about $10.8 million) will go to Real Madrid.

Arrival in Milan and next steps

Gila arrived in Milan on Thursday night after stopping by Lazio’s training center in Formello to say goodbye to the staff and teammates who were still on site. Early Friday morning, he headed to La Madonnina clinic for his medical exams before signing his new contract.

His next destination is Milanello, where the squad’s preseason camp begins on July 13 — the official kickoff to a new era under Ruben Amorim.
