Óscar Whalley opens up about heartbreak, pressure and his fight to be Chivas’ No. 1

After Raúl Rangel had to leave Chivas right before the Liguilla to join Mexico’s national team ahead of the World Cup, Óscar Whalley stepped in and took on the responsibility of guarding the net during the biggest stretch of the Liga MX season. And even though Chivas were knocked out by Cruz Azul in the semifinals, the Spanish‑Mexican goalkeeper left a strong impression.

Speaking with AS México, Whalley described what it was like to enter the postseason with only 180 minutes of Liga MX experience. He said the key to staying steady against Tigres and Cruz Azul was the unity and communication inside the locker room.

“I talked a lot with the club, with Gaby Milito, even with my teammates,” Whalley said. “I felt a lot of confidence from everyone, and that’s why I was able to have a good Liguilla. I did well in the two league matches too, but I felt supported at all times by every teammate, every member of the coaching staff, the sporting directors — everyone.”

Whalley didn’t hide how painful the elimination against Cruz Azul was. Like millions of Chivas fans across Mexico, he felt the sting.

“At that final whistle, a little piece of my heart broke,” he admitted.

After showing flashes of real quality in the six matches he played this season, the former Zaragoza keeper says he’ll stay patient — but he’s not backing down from the competition.

“My role is the same as it’s been for three years: show up to training with the best attitude and bust my tail every day to prove to the coach that I’m the best in my position and deserve to start,” he said.

Whalley also emphasized that his relationship with Tala Rangel remains strong, even as they battle for the same job.

“We get along really well. It’s great training with him. He’s very competitive, just like me. That’s why we make a good team.”

Falling in love with Guadalajara

Whalley revealed that the trust shown by Fernando Hierro and his staff was a major reason he accepted the challenge of joining Chivas — a club he already knew well because of its size and history.

He also shared how deeply he’s connected with the city of Guadalajara.

“My son was born in Guadalajara — I’m already in love with the place,” he said. “Before this, I only knew Monterrey from visiting my aunts, but now I consider myself a tapatío.”
