Osorio urges Mexico to replace Martino with homegrown coach

Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio, who coached Mexico from 2015 to 2018, says it’s time for El Tri to place the national team in the hands of a Mexican.

Former Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio says a Mexican should be appointed in place of Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, who resigned as national-team boss after El Tri’s group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup.

Only foreign Mexico coaches in recent years

Miguel Herrera, who departed the role in 2015, is the last homegrown coach to take charge of the side. In the seven years since then, Mexico have been managed by Colombian Osorio, who was at the helm until 2018, and Argentinian Martino.

Osorio: Mexican would be best fit for national team

Speaking to ESPN this week, Osorio said that this is the ideal moment to appoint a Mexican coach to lead the team into the next World Cup.

“There is such a marked sense of patriotism among everyone in Mexican football, so I think the best thing they could do is to get rid of that factor of the [national] coach being foreign,” the 61-year-old explained.

“Federation needs to start getting everyone coaching badges”

Osorio, who would not be drawn on possible candidates to succeed Martino, also urged the Mexican Football Federation to do more to develop its domestic talent pool of coaches.

“If they don’t have enough coaches with the tools for the job, the Federation needs to start getting everyone their coaching badges,” he said.

“They need to do what they did in England, what they did in Germany, and what they’re doing now in South America.”
