TUDN commentator and former Mexico goalkeeper Oswaldo Sánchez faced criticism for his questioning of Tigres midfielder Diego Lainez, at the end of the Clausura 2023 final against Chivas. The pundit asked the player about his unfortunate and short stay in European soccer.

Oswaldo quizzed Lainez about his failure with Betis and Braga and drew endless criticism for his intrusive manner. Since then, the ex-player had refused to refer to the issue, but at an event at the Coolbet bookmaker, he was encouraged to bring up the matter where he stated that it was a misunderstanding and that the issue has been settled with Lainez.

“There was a misunderstanding, I’m not controversial. I’m an analyst and I try to bring my little experience of 20+ years in professional football and I just talked to him behind the scenes. There have been many rumors around what he was seen doing or not. As soccer people, I’m not one to go out to the media to do many things. I spoke with him in private, he told me what he thought and we remained as good friends as have always been,” Oswaldo said.

Bad timing

Just moments after Oswaldo’s clumsy question, the incident went viral and criticism abounded about the former tlas, América, Chivas and Santos Laguna goalkeeper, whose behavior was questioned on the grounds that it was not the time or place to be discussing such a personal subject - moments after Lainez and Tigres had been crowned Liga MX champions.
