Gregg Berhalter’s second stint in charge of the United States national team hasn’t gone as planned. Following the team’s failure at the Copa América - a tournament which the US hosted, the decision was made to terminate the project. Today, a number of names have been floated as successors, but, for the moment, the one that is resonating the most is Pellegrino Matarazzo.

Defeats to Uruguay and Panama in the group stage of the 2024 Copa América were enough to leave the Stars and Stripes in third place in Group C, leaving them out of the quarter finals, and out of a competition they were playing on home turf. Berhalter could only get one victory - against Bolivia, and that was not enough.

The USMNT betting on Pellegrino Matarazzo

German media outlets Kicker and Bild report that US Soccer has offered the USMNT head coach job to Pellegrino Matarazzo. The 46-year-old, American-born former Stuttgart coach, is currently in charge at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim - his side finished last season in seventh place in the table.

As for his current work situation, Matarazzo is under contract with Hoffenheim until June 2025. However, the same German media reports that his relationship with the club is not so good, and that if the conversations with the USMNT progress as they should, the American coach will leave to take charge of the national team.

The USMNT are next in action in September with a friendly against Canada at Children’s Mercy Park on the 7th, then another three days later against New Zealand at TQL stadium. A third freiendly, against Panama on 13 October completes the team’s schedule for the remainder of the year.
