Doué vs Barcola: French duel to be D’Artagnan against Spain in World Cup semifinal

France’s national team has been showered with praise during this World Cup, and most of it has focused on its attack. Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembélé are terrifying opponents – and for good reason. But France doesn’t play with just three attackers. There’s a fourth, although it isn’t always clear who that will be.

Throughout the tournament, Didier Deschamps has alternated between Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola, two players who could hardly be more different. It’s a luxury problem, given the extraordinary talent both youngsters possess, but it remains a debate nonetheless. It’s a battle to join France’s three established stars. France is still searching for its D’Artagnan.

The two Paris Saint-Germain players have little in common beyond being exceptional footballers. Doué is more measured in the way he carries the ball but incredibly agile in tight spaces, with outstanding technical ability. He’s one of those players who grew up watching Neymar at his peak in Paris. Barcola, meanwhile, is a lightning bolt down the left wing. He’s the more traditional modern winger, someone who creates his advantages through explosive pace rather than imagination.

Looking at the numbers from this World Cup, though, it’s hard to separate them. Both have started three matches, and their playing time has been almost identical – 320 minutes for Doué compared to 282 for Barcola. Their impact in front of goal has also been similar. Doué has one goal and one assist, while Barcola has scored twice and added an assist.

The deeper statistics are just as close. Barcola has completed more successful dribbles (11 to 7) and has been more clinical in front of goal, scoring twice from seven shots, while Doué has found the net only once from 11 attempts. In possession, both have completed between 83% and 85% of their passes. Doué, however, has won back significantly more balls (20 to 11) and has created more chances (11 to 7).

L’Équipe: Doué edges ahead

The differences are there, but they’re minimal. That’s why Deschamps has still struggled to settle on one option. According to L’Équipe, however, Doué is now the favorite to start against Spain.

The debate continues to dominate discussion in France ahead of every match, and it’s no different before the semifinal against Spain. Pedro Porro still doesn’t know which player he’ll be tasked with stopping. Spain’s problem is that, whichever one Deschamps picks, France will have made a very good choice.
