Piqué's messages to Shakira in his first media appearance since the BZRP song: Casio, Twingo, “sal-pique”...

In a Twitch live stream for his Kings League football tournament, Piqué made a number of references to the now-infamous song.

Gerard Piqué has responded to ex-wife Shakira’s record-breaking YouTube hit that takes aim at him and supposed new girlfriend Clara Chia. The track, known simply as BZRP Music Sessions #53, has already racked up more than 75 million views on the site and it looks like the former Barcelona star is responsible for some of them.

On Friday Piqué appeared on a Twitch stream alongside a number of fellow team presidents of his new Kings League football tournament. Also in attendance were Spanish streamer Ibai Plains and former Barcelona and Manchester City striker Kun Aguero.

During the course of the discussion, Piqué and his guests made a number of references to Shakira’s song…

Piqué announces Kings League-Casio sponsorship

In the course of the three-and-a-half-minute track, Shakira managed to land a number of punches on Piqué and his new partner. However one section, in which the Colombia said Piqué had ‘traded a Rolex to a Casio’, stood out.

Piqué, always a shrewd self-promoter, took the opportunity to announce a new deal between his Kings League project and watch manufacturers Casio. He proudly showed off his digital watch, and handed out boxed watches as gifts to the other presidents.

He even went on to say that the watches would ‘last a lifetime’, in a not-too-subtle contrast to his marriage to Shakira.

What does sal-Piqué mean?

One of the more cryptic elements of the lyrics which has evaded non-Spanish speakers is the term ‘perdon que te salpique’. In Spanish the phrase literally translate to ‘Sorry if it splashes you’, or ‘Sorry if it discomforts you’.

However Shakira pronounces ‘salpiqué’ as ‘sal Piqué’, which essentially instructs Piqué to leave. The former footballer also brought that up on his Twitch appearance on Friday, showing that he’s been listening along to the track.

Piqué to arrive in a Twingo for the next games

In another unflattering comparison between herself and Clara Chia, Shakira sang that Piqué had ‘traded a Ferrari for a Twingo’. Once again, Piqué has clearly picked up on this imagery and played up to the suggestion.

He said that he would turn up for the next matchday of the Kings League in a Renault Twingo. It doesn’t appear that any sponsorship deal with the french car manufacturer has yet materialised, but with the Spaniard eager to drew attention to his fledgling 7-a-side league it may only be a matter of time.
