Portugal vs Switzerland preview

Portugal

Despite a team full of big names and talented footballers, the focus around the team, as ever, is centred on Cristiano Ronaldo. Coach Fernando Santos has said he was highly unimpressed by the star striker’s reaction to being taken off against South Korea and would not commit to the 37-year-old captaining or starting against Switzerland. Ronaldo claimed his ‘shushing’ gesture as he came off was only aimed at opposition striker Cho Gue-sung for asking him to speed up his exit, but Santos said: “”Have I seen the images? Yes, I didn’t like it, not at all. I didn’t like it. I really didn’t like it. But from that moment onwards everything is finished regarding that issue.”

Santos rested six players for the final group stage match against South Korea, knowing they had qualified no matter what. And lucky they had, as the Asian side came back to win 2-1 and book a place in the round of 16 against Brazil (where things did not go to plan for them as Brazil won 4-1).

Expect Santos to bring back most of the players he left out for the Korea game, starting with Bruno Fernandes, Joao Felix and defender Ruben Dias. Whether he’s captain or not, expect Cristiano Ronaldo to start.

This is the third clash between the two sides in 2022, both teams winning their home matches in the UEFA National League. The stakes now are immeasurably higher, and although Portugal are favourites, this is a solid Swiss side, who are full of confidence after coming out on top in a bruising battle against Serbia.

Switzerland will be hoping rock solid keeper Yann Sommer is back, after missing the Serbia game with illness. If he isn’t ready, Gregor Kobel will continue between the sticks.

Expect the side to be the same as turned out against Serbia, Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler in the midfield and danger out wide provided by Ruben Vargas and tireless Xherdan Shaqiri.

Could Switzerland end Portugal’s hopes, see what Jennifer Bubel has to say.

Portugal vs Switzerland prediction

Portugal have the ability to get the ball in the net, though they also have the ability to be overprotective of a lead if they get it. However it comes we’d expect the Swiss to get on the scoresheet, but Portugal’s overall technical dominance and speed should see them good. And even if he’s not done much so far, we’d never write Cristiano Ronaldo off.

AS USA Prediction: Portugal 3-1 Switzerland

Who is the referee for Portugal vs Switzerland?

The whistler for the Portugal vs Switzerland game is Cesar Ramos, from Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico. The 38-year-old has been in charge of Denmark vs Tunisia and Belgium vs Morocco, handing out 3 yellows in the first game and two in the second. He also reffed at the World cup in Russia 2018.

Ramos knows Ronaldo, firstly from when he was in charge of the Club World Cup final in 2017 between Gremio and Real Madrid. Having denied Gremio a fairly clear penalty when Ramos fouled Ramiro, he then received the wrath of Ronaldo chalking off what would have been Madrid’s second goal for offside, and refusing to reconsider with the help of VAR. However, Madrid still went on to win 1-0.

The two met again in the World Cup 2018, when Ramos was in charge of Uruguay’s 2-1 win over Portugal in the Round of 16. He booked Ronaldo in the 92nd minute.
