The Apertura 2022 is not yet over, but clubs are already making moves to firm up their squads - and their coaching teams - for the Clausura 2023. We take a look at five deals that could be done ahead of the next tournament.

Cruz Azul keen on Vargas

There is no doubt that one of the heroes of Atlas’ two straight championship wins was Camilo Vargas. The Colombian goalkeeper could be set for a change of scene in the Clausura 2023, though. According to the journalist André Marín, Cruz Azul have told the Rojinegros to name their price for Vargas, 33.

Lillini could take over at Necaxa

Andrés Lillini’s time in charge of Pumas was by no means fruitless: under the Argentine, the Auriazules reached a Liga MX final and appeared in an international tournament. In the Apertura 2022, however, they were a shadow of what they once were. So Lillini departed and, under pressure to find a new coach, Necaxa have gone all out for the 48-year-old. A deal is close, but not yet over the line.

Ferretti in frame for Pumas return

Having dispensed with Lillini, Pumas are also in a hurry to fill their dugout. The seven-time champions are expected to go for a familiar face with previous experience of life at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Talks with Jaime Lozano appear to have broken down, so the indications are that Ricardo Ferretti is poised for a third spell as Pumas boss.

Tigres want Alexis Vega

Although he is one of the most important players at Chivas Guadalajara, Alexis Vega could be on the move before the next tournament. Tigres are reportedly targeting the 26-year-old forward, who is in line to go to the World Cup with Mexico. Los Felinos’ head coach, Miguel Herrera, wants to put together a team that is capable of challenging for the league title, and Vega could be part of that recruitment drive.

Reyes set for América switch

During the Apertura 2022 quarter-finals, Club América took advantage of Puebla’s visit to Mexico City to conclude a deal for centre-back Israel Reyes. The 22-year-old’s imminent arrival stands to leave Las Águilas with a surfeit of defensive options, so players like Sebastián Cáceres and Bruno Valdez are prime candidates to make way for the new signing.
