PSG found its true galáctico after Mbappé left for Real Madrid: the $76-million bargain
PSG’s Georgian winger has turned every Champions League knockout tie into his stage and given Luis Enrique a new kind of superstar.
There is no signing in recent European soccer history that has had the impact of Kvaratskhelia at PSG. In January last year, the Parisian club, which had spent months pursuing him, paid $76 million for a player who needed no time to adapt before becoming a cornerstone of Luis Enrique’s system. If his first season was extraordinary, his second is exceeding every expectation.
Kvaratskhelia’s instant impact at PSG reshapes Luis Enrique’s system
As in the first leg, “Kvara” was decisive again in the second leg of the Champions League semifinals. He needed two minutes to silence the roaring Allianz Arena in Munich, after a devastating run into open space ended with a superb Dembélé goal from the Georgian’s pass. PSG’s 0-1 left Bayern stunned. It was his 16th goal contribution since the competition began and his seventh in a row.
Kvara’s historic scoring streak
Kvara is the only player in Champions League history to register a goal involvement in seven straight knockout-stage games. Since the Champions League knockout rounds began, the only game in which he did not score or assist was the playoff first leg against Monaco in the Principality (2-3). Against Chelsea in the round of 16, starting on the bench did not unsettle him – it spurred him on, as he scored twice in the first leg and also found the net in the return game that sent PSG into the quarterfinals of Europe’s top competition.
No one has been able to stop him. Then, in the quarterfinals against Liverpool, the winger scored in the first leg and assisted in the second. And, in the first semifinal meeting with Bayern, he produced a decisive brace as PSG prevailed 5-4 in a historic, unforgettable game. In the return battle in Munich, an explosive, unstoppable burst led to his assist for Dembélé, putting Luis Enrique’s side on course in the tie.
The Georgian perfectly embodies the Asturian coach’s style of play, with Luis Enrique valuing him not only for his attacking output but also for his work off the ball. The numbers praise him again: he is the forward with the third-most recoveries (27.6) in the entire Champions League, behind only Barcola and Hauge. A machine for running, competing and making the difference in the opposition half, he undoubtedly changed PSG’s history a year and a half ago after accepting the reigning European champion’s offer midway through last season.
Kvaratskhelia stats: goals, assists and expected goals explained
His record since the knockout rounds began is brilliant. Kvara has scored seven goals and provided four assists in his last eight Champions League games, averaging a decisive contribution every 53 minutes. He has 10 Champions League goals from 4.00 expected goals, meaning he has scored six more than expected when analyzing the positions from which he has taken his shots. The $76 million PSG paid to sign him now looks almost cheap amid unprecedented inflation in the transfer market.
Kvaratskhelia already knows what it means to score in a Champions League final. He did so last year against Inter in a game that will be remembered as one of the greatest displays by a soccer team in Champions League history (5-0). On May 30, in Budapest against Arsenal, he will try to lead PSG as he has in every knockout tie of this Champions League campaign. There is not a single player close to him this year in terms of decisiveness. Luis Enrique found his own galáctico just when the galáctico era seemed to have disappeared without Kylian Mbappé. “Kvaradona” is making history in Paris.
