PSG launch blockbuster bid to steal Julián Alvarez from Atlético Madrid
Atlético face a busy summer as interest in Julián Alvarez grows ahead of a potentially decisive transfer window.
Atlético Madrid is bracing for a chaotic transfer window, both in terms of arrivals and departures. Antoine Griezmann is expected to leave, but he may not be the only marquee name heading out of the Spanish capital.
Paris Saint-Germain has already begun working behind the scenes on a move for Julián Álvarez, as AS has reported in recent days. The French giant wants “La Araña” (“The Spider”) leading the line under Luis Enrique next season. Whether PSG can actually pull it off remains to be seen.
PSG ready massive Álvarez offer
What could become one of the biggest transfer deals of the summer is already taking shape.
Mateu Alemany was the executive who opened talks with PSG back in January in an attempt to sign Lee Kang-in, a move that ultimately fell through. He is also fully aware of PSG’s growing interest in Álvarez. Relations between the two clubs are reportedly excellent, especially between Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil and PSG’s top leadership.
As always in deals of this magnitude, though, everything comes down to money. And PSG has plenty of it.
Atlético has consistently maintained that Álvarez will not leave for anything less than roughly $115 million. From that point onward, negotiations could begin. Sources around the situation believe a final deal could climb into the $160-175 million range, numbers that would be extremely difficult for Atlético to turn down.
Álvarez’s camp has explored options
Álvarez’s representatives have reportedly been speaking with several clubs for some time to gauge potential interest in the Argentine forward. This is not a recent development.
PSG appears determined to bring him to Paris for the 2026-27 campaign. Meanwhile, Atlético’s sporting department remains interested in several PSG players, including Lee Kang-in and Portuguese striker Gonçalo Ramos.
At this stage, however, those potential moves would likely be handled separately from any Álvarez negotiations.
The next few weeks could prove decisive. Whenever Álvarez has been asked publicly about his future, he has rarely offered a definitive commitment to Atlético, something that has not gone unnoticed by the club’s fanbase.
A season below expectations in Madrid
Álvarez’s 2025-26 season has been productive on paper, but inconsistent overall.
The 26-year-old scored 20 goals across all competitions, including 10 in the Champions League, eight in La Liga, and two in the Copa del Rey. He also added nine assists.
While his European numbers were impressive, his domestic form has not consistently matched expectations for a player widely considered one of the world’s elite forwards.
That represents a decline from his debut season with Atlético, when he scored 29 goals in 57 competitive appearances and added eight assists. In that campaign, he found the net 17 times in La Liga, seven times in the Champions League, and five times in the Copa del Rey.
This season, he has been unable to replicate those numbers.
Could this be his final season at Atlético?
Despite the dip in form, Álvarez remains one of the most coveted strikers in world soccer.
He is under contract through 2030 and currently carries an estimated market value of around $105 million. Yet after another trophyless season for Atlético Madrid, speculation surrounding his future continues to intensify.
The conversations are already happening behind closed doors. And while a transfer of this size takes time, PSG has clearly set its sights on one of the game’s biggest attacking stars.
