Wednesday’s Champions League group-stage clash between Sevilla and PSV Eindhoven proved to be a dramatic encounter, with both teams desperately searching for points as they looked to join Arsenal in the Round of 16. Mexico international Hirving Lozano started in attack for the Dutch team but had a game to forget for two separate reasons.

Lozano suspended for PSV’s final UCL group stage game against Arsenal

The former Pachuca winger went into the match walking on a suspension tightrope, knowing that a third yellow card in this season’s competition would see him miss the matchday six fixture at home to The Gunners. And on the 33rd minute of the game in Spain, Lozano’s fears were realised when he was booked for a challenge on Lucas Ocampos. The 28-year-old remonstrated with Italian referee Davide Massa to no avail.

What injury did Lozano suffer against Sevilla?

And worse was to follow for the Mexican, who was then forced off the field on the stroke of half time due to injury. A PSV counterattack ended with Lozano having a shot from the edge of the box deflected wide for a corner, after which he immediately went down and clutched the back of his right leg, having seemingly pulled his hamstring.

After receiving treatment on the field, the PSV physio ruled the attacker was unable to continue and he was replaced by Yorbe Vertessen. There has as yet been no confirmation of what injury Lozano has suffered, which will likely be revealed in the coming hours.

USMNT striker Pepi scores late PSV winner

The good news for “Chucky” is that PSV, who were 1-0 down when he went off, came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, with USMNT striker Ricardo Pepi scoring a dramatic late winner in injury time. As a result, the Dutch side will qualify for the Round of 16 if Arsenal defeat Lens later on Wednesday.
