Pumas make history in 2024 Leagues Cup
Pumas UNAM demonstrated their superiority over Vancouver Whitecaps and are into the round of 16 of this season’s Leagues Cup.
The UNAM Pumas achieved a historic milestone in the 2024 Leagues Cup on Wednesday. For the first time since the tournament received the endorsement of CONCACAF, the university team has advanced past the round of 32 to the next phase.
Who will Pumas play in Leagues Cup round of 16?
The team, led by Gustamo Lema, demonstrated their superiority over the Vancouver Whitecaps, winning 2-0 in the round of 32. With goals from César Huerta and Jorge Ruvalcaba, the university team secured their place in the next round and continue to progress confidently in the tournament.
Since CONCACAF granted its endorsement to the Leagues Cup, the Pumas had not managed to advance past the round of 32. In previous editions, the team was eliminated at this stage, causing some frustration among fans.
In 2021, in an unofficial edition of the Leagues Cup, the team reached the semifinals but was eliminated by León. In the 2023 edition, the Pumas were eliminated in the round of 32 by Querétaro, a result that sparked controversy and disappointment among university supporters. Now the question is: how far can they go?
