Club Universidad Nacional cut ties with Brazilian defender Dani Alves and will assume the consequences for the termination of his contract. The decision of the Auriazul board of directors was made based on the former Barcelona player’s situation in Spain.

After Alves was arrested in Barcelona earlier on Friday, a judge ordered prison without bail for the 39-year-old, who is facing charges of sexual assault. The Liga MX club called a press conference and president Leopoldo Silva announced that they will disassociate themselves from Alves. “Club Universidad Nacional has taken the decision to rescind, with justified cause, the working contract of Daniel Alves as from today,” Silva explained. “With this decision, the club reiterates its commitment to not tolerate, actions that go against the spirit and values of our institution - whoever they are committed by. Club Universidad Nacional is an institution that promotes respect, dignified and professional comportment from its players both on and off the pitch. Our players should be role models in society - in Mexico and all other parts of the world. We cannot allow that the conduct of one person to damage our working philosophy, which has been exemplary in the development of young sportsmen and women in our country”.

Pumas to accept consequences of contract

Pedregal’s board of directors also reported that they will abide by any possible future sanctions that may arise from the player himself, related sponsorship deals or third parties since the Brazilian had a contract in force until June 2023 with the club.
