Two of the contenders for the title, Spain and Portugal, will face fierce opposition in the round of 16 against Morocco and Switzerland, respectively.

The World Cup has entered its most dramatic phase, as all teams are facing each other in do-or-die games and all the efforts put in till now may pay off or just vanish depending on a single outcome from now on.

The winner of the Morocco vs Spain game will face the nation that will come out on top between Portugal and Switzerland for a place in the semifinals, having top contenders Brazil and Argentina on the opposite side of the bracket.

World Cup games today, Tuesday 6 December (all times ET)

Morocco vs Spain (10.00 a.m. ET)

Morocco want to keep surprising everybody in this World Cup but now face Spain, arguably their biggest test to date.

Together with Japan, South Korea, and Australia, the North African nation has been one of the tournament’s surprise packages. They all managed to progress to the knockout rounds despite having difficult group stages.

Against all the odds, the Atlas Lions ended up topping Group F after defeating section favorites Belgium and also Canada, while they registered a goalless tie vs Croatia, the other team that advanced to the round of 16.

Meanwhile, La Roja will be aiming to improve on their performance at the 2018 World Cup, when they were eliminated in the opening knockout round by the host nation.

There’s an atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding Luis Enrique’s men, as despite thrashing Costa Rica in their opener, they scored a draw against Germany and a defeat vs Japan.

The Spaniards will need to find their initial inspiration to be able to find the back of the net if they want to have chances of progressing, as Morocco have proven to be a solid side from back to front.

Portugal vs Switzerland (2.00 p.m. ET)

Cristiano Ronaldo is playing his last World Cup and he wants to guide his team as far as he can, but they are facing tough rivals Switzerland on the way.

Although the Group H winners are not among the top favorites to win the tournament, they can’t be written off, as they have a talented squad and could beat any opponent at any given moment, as they proved at Euro 2016.

The truth is that Fernando Santos’s men have delivered when they have had to, beating Ghana in their opener (3-2) and being the superior team vs Uruguay (2-0), who didn’t make it to this stage of the competition.

Meanwhile, Switzerland don’t have a big star in their squad, but overall they are a strong team, with players that have been playing together for years.

The Nati grabbed their first three points against Cameroon in the last minutes, lost 1-0 in a competitive match against Brazil, and came back to defeat a combative Serbia in the final game of the section (2-3).

Freuler, Xhaka, Shaqiri, Embolo and co. will now try to guide the Swiss team to the quarterfinals for the second time in a World Cup.
