Raphinha breaks silence on Atlético Madrid taunt: “A moment of tension”
Brazilian winger apologizes for gestures toward Atlético fans after Champions League exit, which could lead to a UEFA sanction.

Barcelona suffered a controversial Champions League exit at the hands of Atlético Madrid on Tuesday, with Raphinha unable to keep his emotions in check after the final whistle.
The Brazilian attacker, who did not play at the Metropolitano due to injury, made repeated gestures toward the home crowd, signaling that Atlético would be knocked out in the next round.
Clips showed him mouthing the phrase “para fuera” (“you’re going out”) at a section of Atleti fans, who presumably were not too bothered by his prediction as they celebrated their team’s two-legged victory.
Raphinha apologizes on social media
On Wednesday, Raphinha took to Instagram to apologize for his actions, explaining that he had been caught up in the heat of the moment as he was goaded by one Atlético supporter in particular.
“Sorry for my gesture, which doesn’t align with my values or my character,” the Barça star wrote on Instagram. “It happened during a moment of tension and was a response to a fan who was disrespecting me.”

UEFA punishment still possible
Whether the apology will be enough to keep Raphinha out of trouble with UEFA remains to be seen. European soccer’s governing body is said to have taken note of his gesture, which echoed the actions of several Real Madrid players after a Champions League game against Atlético last season.
Antonio Rüdiger was given a one-game suspension for making a cut-throat gesture, while Kylian Mbappé, Dani Ceballos and Jude Bellingham were fined.
Additionally, Raphinha post-match comments about the game being “robbed” also been flagged by UEFA. There is clear precedent for punishment in similar situations. Several years ago, Neymar made comparable remarks and was handed a three-game suspension.
