RB Leipzig vs Real Madrid: how it happened

Match report: Leipzig outclassed and outran the Champions

RB Leipzig were relentless, they didn't stop for a second and choked Madrid form the first whistle. Perhaps the absentees could have made a difference but all the credit has to go to Rose's side

Carlo Ancelotti's side never really got going and weren't given the slightest breather all game. Vinicius tried his best had some bright moments, but ultimately Timo Werner's finish was enough to see the race for top spot go down to the last day.

That defeat ends Madrid's unbeaten run for the season.

Courtois isn't holding back

"We came out asleep, with no intensity or aggression. You can't do that."

A bright spot in a dark evening for Madrid

For those looking for positives, OptaJose have got you covered:

as.com

Lucas speaks to the cameras

"This is the Champions League and the best teams are here. Leipzig showed that tonight" said the Real Madrid defender.

as.com

Leipzig Twitter having fun tonight. And rightly so.

Don't think the slogan will catch on, mind you.

as.com

Full time! Leipzig 3-2 Real Madrid

as.com
90+3

Goal! 3-2!

The Brazilian sends the goalkeeper the wrong way. That might be it in terms of time though...

as.com
90+3

Rodrygo steps up...

as.com
90+2

Penalty? Yes! Rodrygo tripped in the box... they couldn't, could they?

as.com
90

Three minutes added on.

as.com
89

More changes for RBLeipzig: Henrichs comes on for Simakan

as.com
88

Olmo shoots close!

Courtois had to stretch his full 6-metre long body to make sure that wasn't heading in. Olmo had found space down Madrid's right (they're leaky from all sides today) and whipped one wide.

as.com
86

I don't know who has more variety, the RB Leipzig players or their fans: the crowd has gone from swaying to coordinated jumping now and it looks fantastic. Bravo.

as.com
84

Kampl on, Haidara off.

Great game from the midfielder today.

as.com
81

Goooool!! Werner makes it three!

Werner darts away from Militão as Simakanmakes a great run forward down the right wing.

The German anticipates the ball to the far post as as the Madrid defence get sucked in and he taps it in to (surely) send Madrid home with their unbeaten run broken.

Leipzig 3-1 Madrid

as.com
79

That should have been the equaliser from Vini!

Hazard spins well and works it out wide to Asensio; Vinicius stabs the cross an inch wide of the post.

as.com
77

Interesting move as Kroos comes off for Eden Hazard.

Let's see if the Belgian can add to his tally of, erm, one goal this season.

as.com
74

I'll be honest, I didn't think the craziness from Leipzig would last this long, but they have not given Madrid a moment to breathe tonight.

as.com
71

Leipzig come closeagain! Werner slices the ball just wide after typically good movement from the striker.

as.com
69

Ancelotti moves his pieces, bringing on Carvajal and Alaba. Lucas and Nacho off.

as.com
68

Time for changes: Olmo, Werner and Diallo on.

Forsberg, Silva and Raum come off.

as.com
66

An attempt from Madrid at building up down the right comes to nothing as Lucas / Asensio combination can't find a way through the block RB Leipzig have formed.

as.com
65

Timo Werner looks like he's being prepared to come on...

as.com
63

Leipzig's attempts at getting past Madrid are so varied: they are comfortable to go long over the top, play through the lines or send the ball out wide to be fired into the box.

Marco Rose is surely going to be happy with his team so far.

as.com
60

The 45,000 fans are swaying in the stands and the whole atmosphere is absolutely immense. The players are definitely being rewarded for their performance tonight.

as.com
58

Madrid go long from Militão and get in behind but the cross goes nowehere.

Leipzig immediately counter at lightning pace (obviously) but decide to work the ball back to slow the game down. And we thank them for that.

as.com
56

Given the crazy energy levels of this game, I'm quite proud to have only made one terrible attempt at a fizzy drink pun so far. But there's still time yet.

as.com
53

Chance! Tchouameni shoots after a fantastic tackle to win the ball near halfway.

End to end play as RB Leipzig immediately fire the ball over the defence but Thibaut sweeps up nicely.

as.com
51

Chance! Nkunku twists and turns and fires one close! Madrid all of a sudden on the ropes again.

as.com
48

Lucas booked for a trip on goal scorer Gvardiol

as.com
48

Madrid perhaps showing signs of life: some nice passing from them in midfield - Camavinga especially - allows them to progress and at least imagine having a shot on goal

as.com

Peep! Second half is on; Madrid with it all to do if they want anything from this game

as.com

Madrid back out on the pitch. No changes.

Leipzig also heading out for the second half with the same eleven.

as.com

Teams should be out soon - let's see if Ancelotti has made any changes.

as.com

Half time scores around Europe

Things aren't going well for Shakhtar: not only are Leipzig winning, but they are behind at Celtic Park.

as.com

I guess they're right...

If any team in Europe knows its way around a comeback, it's this lot.

as.com

Madrid still have hope

And, breathe...

I feel like I've just been under 45 minutes of RB pressing myself!

The hosts have made life impossible so far for Madrid, who have had to feed off scraps until Vinicius Jr. gave them a chance of a comeback with a fine header.

Nkunku has been pulling the strings but the game has been made a hellish experience by all eleven Leipzig players, who have forced Madrid to work hard for even the slightest chance.

as.com

Half time! RB Leipzig 2-1 Real Madrid

as.com
as.com
44

GOAL! Vinicius header!

Asensio puts a lovely cross in and Vinicius does his best Benzema impression as he directs a header past Blaswich from the penalty spot.

as.com
43

A shot on target for Real Madrid! Vinicius hits a tame effort towards Blaswich.

An easy save but Madrid should just be content with the fact they created something.

as.com
41

Big chance for the home side!

Kroos loses the ball and Szoboszlai slides it just wide. Courtois was rooted to the spot.

as.com
39

Nkunku running the show tonight, showing us some sublime ball control to avoid the tackle. A fantastic player.

as.com
36

Chance for Vini! Goalkeeper saves again.

Kross swung in a corner and Vinicius hit a ferocious volley as it fell to him.

Better from Madrid.

as.com
34

Chance! Rodrygo with a close effort to the near post! Saved by the keeper

as.com
32

Camavinga finds a way to break the press but loses the ball in the box. And it's back with RB Leipzig, again.

as.com
30

If the crowd weren't singing so loudly, we might be able to hear the chuckles of the RB Leipzig players as they effortlessly pass around Real Madrid's attempt at a high press

as.com
27

In another positive move from the hosts, Forsberg squeezes himself inside that invisible pocket between Lucas and Nacho, but this time watches the ball bounce loose

as.com
25

First shot of the night for Vini, who (sort of) gets in behind the defence and smacks a shot high and wide. Frustration showing.

as.com
24

Longest spell on the ball so far for Madrid. They've switched the play a couple of times from left to right but still look to be going nowhere.

as.com
21

Madrid still struggling to create

Kroos is dropping back to look to send the ball to a teammate but that's only inviting more pressure from the home side.

Those injuries for Madrid look to have caused pretty huge holes in the team.

as.com
as.com
as.com
18

Two nil!

Nkunku with a fantastic strike after a free-kick is worked short. Madrid shell-shocked and the striker takes advantage of Tchouameni's slow reactions inside the box

as.com
18

And another!

More chances for RB Leipzig as Haidara makes Courtois do Courtois things and pull off an absolutely great save

as.com
16

Chance! Hosts well on top

Nkunku comes close as Courtois comes well off his line - that could have been two!

as.com

Gvardi-goal!

as.com
13

Goal! Gvardiol! 1-0 Leipzig!

Gvardiol is the fastest to react after the corner is put in and the hosts have to react if they are to claim top spot in the group

as.com
11

Everyone's very fired up

Leipzig's press is really stifling Madrid at the moment.

The European champions are looking to switch the play and find a moment to break the lines but the German side are swarming over them.

as.com
9

It's shaping up to a lively affair; energy levels are high for both sides.

Ancelotti applauding his team but also pacing nervously up and down the touchline.

as.com
7

Leipzig looking good so far, both in and out of possession

Leipzig moving the ball well and progressing down Madrid's left side. They almost got in behind the defence but Silva didn't quite read the pass.

as.com
5

Sorry about that joke there. Real Madrid biting back now and come very close from a Tchouameni header. Marco Asensio with a very dangerous-looking cross.

as.com
4

It looks like a 4-2-2-2 from RB Leipzig here as they press Real Madrid like mad. They've definitely had sort of some pre-match power drink...

as.com
2

Leipzig come flying out and have already tested Real Madrid! Nkunku gets on the end of a scramble and Courtois saves from close range after great work from Forsberg.

as.com

And we're off!

Remember, if you want some pictures to go with my words, check out Paramount's live coverage of the game.

as.com

A minute for Mateschitz

Before we begin, the stadium applauds in memory of Red Bull's co-founder, Dietrich Mateschitz, who sadly passed away on Saturday

as.com

Ready to go...

Everything's in order: the players are out, the big UCL logo is flapping in the middle of the pitch and the anthem has just begun to ring out across the ground - let's go!

as.com

Fans in full voice as players enter the tunnel

There's scarf waving from all four sides of the stadium as the crowd prepares for the players to come out of the tunnel - the RB Arena is rocking

as.com

Not long to go now...

15 minutes to go until kick-off. Real Madrid are finishing the warmup and then they'll be in the changing room for Ancelotti's team talk.

as.com

The RB Arena looking lovely

It's not quite full just yet, but what a beautiful stadium.

as.com

The referee (probably) loves great goals

Tonight's man with the whistle is Italian Daniele Orsato.

He has been the referee for two matches during this UCL campaign: Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Spurs and Manchester City 2-1 Dortmund (the one with *that* Haaland goal).

as.com

Ancelotti gives team news

Thanks, Carlo. I've had over an hour to study his line up and now it turns out Rudiger is the left-back and Nacho is paired with Militão *eye roll emoji*.

as.com

The birthday boy!

Dominic Szoboszlai turns 22 today. The normal thing would be to make a 'will he get a present today?' comment, but I won't.

as.com

Marco's time to shine?

Diario AS went with the headline 'Finally Asensio' this morning. The Spaniard has not featured heavily this season, with his longest time on the pitch actually being against RB Leipzig back in September - just 26 minutes!

as.com

Celtic looking to upset Shakhtar

The other match in Group F tonight is Celtic vs Shakhtar, where the Scottish side will look to regain some pride after a disappointing European adventure so far.

as.com

Marco Rose chooses RB Leipzig stars

Nkunku only managed half an hour in the 3-3 draw vs Augsburg - where Leipzig came back from 3-0 down - but he's been chosen tonight by the manager to play alongside (or maybe in behind) Silva

Spaniard Dani Olmo only makes the bench this evening after he wasn't declared fit by Rose to play for the full 90 minutes.

as.com

RB Leipzig starting XI

RB Leipzig starting XI: Blaswich; Simakan, Orban, Gvardiol, Raum; Haidara, Schlager, Szoboszlai, Forsberg, Nkunku; Silva

as.com

Madrid without main marksman

Fede Valverde has been forced to sit tonight's match out due to an injury he picked up in the last game against Sevilla.

As Opta show below, a lot of Madrid's threat this season has come from outside the box, with the Uruguayan the reason behind a number of them so far.

as.com

The away dressing room is all set!

Carlo's typical calmness means we have the Madrid XI super early and as we can see, Los Blancos are going to be in black tonight.

as.com

Real Madrid's starting XI

Real Madrid starting XI: Courtois; Lucas, Rüdiger, Militão, Nacho; Tchouameni, Kroos, Camavinga; Asensio, Rodrygo, Vini Jr.
