Real Madrid set to sign Fran García: how much will he cost?

Amid interest from Bayer Leverkusen and Inter, Real Madrid are set to snap up Rayo Vallecano defender Fran García - and will only have to pay half of his buy-out figure.

Real Madrid are close to re-signing Rayo Vallecano left-back Fran García, who is a product of the Spanish and European champions’ academy.

García spent seven years in the Madrid youth set-up, rising through the ranks to make 59 appearances for the the club’s ‘B’ team, Real Madrid Castilla, between 2018 and 2020. Having also played one senior game for Madrid - in a Copa del Rey last-32 tie against UD Melilla - the 23-year-old was loaned to Rayo in September 2020, before making the move permanent the following year.

Real Madrid can sign García for €5m

Madrid still own 50% of García’s federative rights, so they can purchase the defender for only half of the €10m buy-out figure in his Rayo contract.

In recent weeks, Bayer Leverkusen have been eyeing a move for the Spain Under-21 cap, with the Bundesliga club ready to trigger his release clause. AS understands that Inter Milan have also been chasing the player and have already submitted a significant bid. This growing interest in García has persuaded Madrid chiefs that now is the time to bring him back to the club.

Having been made aware of Madrid’s desire to sign him, García has told his agent, Ginés Carvajal, to prioritise Los Merengues’ offer. When he left the 14-time European Cup winners, his dream was to rejoin the club one day.

Madrid set to loan player straight back to Rayo

García wouldn’t actually return to the Bernabéu until the summer, though. Madrid’s plan is to loan him back to Rayo until June, allowing him to complete the season with Andoni Iraola’s side.

From next term onwards, however, García would fight for the left-back berth at Madrid. As things stand, head coach Carlo Ancelotti only has one recognised player in that position, Ferland Mendy, who has been under fire this season after suffering a significant loss of form.
