Real Madrid expected to offer Marco Asensio new deal after PSG bid

Marco Asensio’s contract situation has become a pressing issue for Real Madrid, as the attacker’s current deal expires on 30 June, which means he is free to agree a move to another club for next season. The Spaniard is not playing as much as he would like, hampered by having to compete for a starting jersey with Vinícius, Karim Benzema, Fede Valverde and Rodrygo.

Nevertheless, he continues to prove his worth when given the chance by doing what he does best: scoring goals. And not just any old goals. Spectacular goals, such as the one he rattled in against Valencia on Thursday to open the scoring, a left-footed strike from all of 30 yards. Asensio has scored four times this season, twice in the League and twice in the Champions League.

However, despite his impact from the bench, the former Real Mallorca man has yet to have a new contract put in front of him. The Spain international expected to be offered a new deal last summer after a season in which, despite only being a regular starter for a short spell, he ended up as Los Blancos’ third top scorer with 12 goals, behind only Benzema and Vinícius. But that never materialised, with Madrid waiting to see how he performed this season instead. “I can extend my deal or I can leave. Or I could stay and see out my contract,” a matter-of-fact Asensio said in June 2022.

Paris Saint-Germain offer for Asensio rejected

Asensio has started to receive admiring glances from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. The latest was Paris Saint-Germain, who contacted Madrid at the end of January to enquire about a cut-price transfer, given that the forward is out of contract in just a few months. But the French club were knocked back and told that Los Merengues intend to offer Asensio a new deal, although its terms have yet to be finalised. It will then be up to Asensio who, at 27, will feel needs to be playing regular first-team soccer.
