REAL MADRID

Real Madrid monitoring Sevilla defender Juanlu

Real Madrid have been following the Spanish defender for some time.

Juanlu is being watched by those at Real Madrid in charge of monitoring the emergence of young talent across Spain. Since joining Sevilla’s academy in 2015 at the age of 12, Madrid have received good reports on the defender.

The 20-year-old’s natural position is right-back, although he can also play as a central defender. He has represented Spain at U-16 (2019), U-17, U-18 (2020), U-19 (2021-22) and U-21 level (2023).

Spell at Mirandés

After making his first-team debut for Sevilla and playing 13 games in 2021-22, he spent the following season on loan at Mirandés, a move that was positive for his development. This season he has established himself in the Sevilla first team, where he is a regular starter, and on Thursday he played against Athletic Club at the Sánchez Pizjuán.

Real Madrid’s plan

Madrid’s plan would be to sign him in the summer for a reasonable fee (his current price on Transfermarkt is €8million), and allow him to act as Dani Carvajal’s understudy. But the issue of the transfer fee could put the brakes on a potential move, given that after renewing his contract with Sevilla until 2026 the Andalusian side put a €20million termination clause in his contract, an amount that Madrid are not willing to pay. And Sevilla have no intention of lowering the fee, so negotiations are unlikely to be straightforward.

Alphonso Davies

Paying €20million for Juanlu’s clause is not seen as reasonable by the Madrid board, given that in order to balance the books they will only make a financial effort for a top signing like Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich left-back is a target for next season, given that Ferland Mendy (28) will be allowed to leave as the club are not planning to offer him an extension of his current contract, which expires in 2025.

Davies has 18 months left on his contract with Bayern, so Madrid believe the German side could demand between €40million and €50million for him. On Transfermarkt he is currently worth €70million.
