Real Madrid ready to welcome Luka Modric back with open arms

After Milan’s Champions League collapse, the Croatian icon could be nearing a farewell at the 2026 World Cup before a Real Madrid return.

For those of us who still love pure football and genuine artistry, Luka Modric’s future appears to be drifting farther away from the pitch.

After AC Milan’s disastrous loss to Cagliari at San Siro, a defeat that cost the club a place in the Champions League, the Croatian legend may now see the most dignified ending in retiring with his beloved national team after the 2026 World Cup, which begins June 11.

At this stage of his career, Modric has nothing left to prove.

During his time on the field this season, the veteran midfielder helped keep Massimiliano Allegri’s Milan in the Champions League race until the final round of Serie A play. In 35 appearances for the Rossoneri, most of them starts, Modric contributed two goals and three assists while once again bringing calm, intelligence and leadership to the midfield.

But about a month ago, he suffered a fractured cheekbone against Juventus, and Milan never truly recovered from his absence. The club’s late collapse ultimately sent them down into the Europa League instead.

How Modric won over Milan fans instantly

If anything, Modric leaves Milan with his reputation enhanced.

Just as he did during 13 unforgettable years at Real Madrid, he quickly won over supporters through his professionalism, commitment and relentless competitiveness. Many around the club believe he helped revive a Milan side that had long looked disconnected from Europe’s elite level.

His impact even extended beyond the field.

Modric reportedly allowed club officials to display his 2018 Ballon d’Or trophy, won during his time with Real Madrid, inside Milan’s museum as a symbol of prestige and pride for the Italian giants.

A Real Madrid return could already be waiting

Still, with his 41st birthday approaching Sept. 9, Modric appears closer to retirement than another lengthy extension of his playing career.

After all, there is little left for him to accomplish following one of the most decorated and respected careers in modern soccer history.

Florentino Pérez already assured Modric during last season’s emotional farewell ceremony for both him and Carlo Ancelotti that the doors of Real Madrid would always remain open whenever he decided to retire.

That moment may now be approaching quickly.

Modric has always shown a deep passion for every aspect of the game, and many inside Madrid believe he would thrive in a front-office or advisory role. Whether as a sporting director, consultant or senior executive, the Croatian star’s football knowledge and global respect would make him a natural fit.

And perhaps most importantly, Madrid fans still adore him.
