Update:

Around 15:00 on Wednesday, Real Madrid issued a statement that effectively marks the end of the Super League. The announcement sets out an agreement with UEFA and the EFC (the former ECA) “for the good of European club football, respecting the principle of sporting merit and emphasising the long-term sustainability of clubs and the improvement of the fan experience through the use of technology”.

The text published by the Madrid club, later joined by the EFC and UEFA, signals the farewell to the Super League. According to the statement, “this agreement of principles will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League.” The announcement comes after Barcelona officially withdrew from the project last Saturday.

Through its promoter company A22, the Super League and Real Madrid still had an ongoing legal dispute with UEFA, and both parties intended to continue with a lawsuit seeking $5.36 billion USD in damages and lost profits resulting from being unable to launch the competition. The agreement they have now reached brings those legal disputes to an end.

The Super League was created in 2021 with the support of its 12 founding members: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham, Juventus, Milan and Inter Milan. In the first few days, the English clubs withdrew in quick succession. The Italian clubs and Atlético later pulled out, leaving Barcelona and Real Madrid as the only remaining members until this week.

Real Madrid’s statement:

UEFA, European Football Clubs and Real Madrid CF reach agreement for the good of European club football.

Following months of discussions conducted in the best interests of European football, UEFA, European Football Clubs (EFC), and Real Madrid CF announce that they have reached an agreement of principles for the well-being of European club football, respecting the principle of sporting merit with emphasis on long-term club sustainability and the enhancement of fan experience through the use of technology.

This agreement of principles will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League, once such principles are executed and implemented.
