Much has been made about Real Madrid not signing an elite-level striker to replace Karim Benzema, although there can be little doubt that have added a world-class midfielder in the shape of Jude Bellingham, who marked his LaLiga debut against Athletic Club in style.

After finding the net with a sublime chip against Manchester United in Los Blancos’ second match of their pre-season tour of the United States, the England star scored his first goal in the Spanish top flight in his first appearance in the competition at San Mamés in Bilbao.

Bellingham doubles Madrid’s lead against Athletic

Just a matter of minutes after Brazilian attacker Rodrigo had given Madrid the lead, David Alaba’s corner found its way to the former Borussia Dortmund man, who didn’t get a great connection on his first-time strike but saw it bounce into the ground and loop beyond the reach of Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón.

Bellingham’s goal means he has followed in the footsteps of another high-profile Englishman who pulled on the famous white jersey not so long ago. David Beckham was arguably the last true Galático signing of Florentino Pérez’s first spell as president (unless we count Michael Owen and Robinho) and equally wasted little time in making an impact in the Spanish capital in 2003.

Beckham’s fast start in a Real Madrid jersey

The current Inter Miami owner scored on his first two appearances at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, with his first goal a rare header in a Spanish Super Cup victory over Real Mallorca, which was his second match for the club.

Three days later, he then also found the net on his league debut, a 2-1 win against Real Betis. Beckham converted Ronaldo’s low left-wing cross at the far post only two minutes into his LaLiga career.

How many goals did Beckham score for Los Blancos? What trophies did he win?

The former England captain went onto to score 20 goals in 155 appearances in all competitions (13 in 116 in LaLiga) for the club, although he won just one league title and that Spanish Super Cup in four seasons in Madrid. Bellingham will be hoping for better, both individually and collectively.
