Real Madrid vs Barcelona how they shape up

Can Real Madrid Femenino vs Barcelona Femení be considered El Clásico of women’s football or is it still a bit early? Atlético Madrid have been Barça’s main challengers in recent years, while Las Blancas have only existed under their present moniker since 2020. But there are plenty of signs in the early part of the season that Real Madrid are about to make the step up to the top level of women’s football, both in Spain and in Europe, if they haven’t already.

Madrid have made a blistering start to the new season, winning five and drawing one of their opening six league matches, their only dropped points coming in a 2-2 draw at Levante. They’ve conceded just one other goal and have scored more than three a game on average. As things stand, that’s good enough for fourth spot in the table, although the three teams ahead of them have played either one or two games more.

One of those clubs is, inevitably, Barcelona. The Catalans have bulldozed their way to three successive league titles and show no signs of letting up this season; seven league games, seven victories, 25 goals scored, only two conceded. For all that Real Madrid’s start to the campaign has been impressive, Barça has been just that bit better. Sunday’s fixture is an opportunity for Las Blancas to test themselves against the best and for their opponents to show who remains on top.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona: players to watch

Scotland international midfielder Caroline Weir has made an exceptional start to her time at Real Madrid, netting four goals in her first five league games and being named the league’s player of the month for October. Esther González and Nahikari García have formed an excellent partnership in attack, scoring nine league goals between them already, while the trickery of winger Athenea del Castillo is something to look out for.

Barcelona will be unable to call upon some of their star attacking names for Sunday’s clash, with Ballon d’Or Féminin winner Alexia Putellas still recovering from an ACL tear, while Mariona Caldentey and Caroline Graham Hansen are also absent. The onus to score could well be on Brazilian forward Geyse Ferreira, who joined the club from Sunday’s opponents in the summer and has made a good start to life in Barcelona, scoring four times in six league outings. Aitana Bonmatí and Patri Guijarro will look to control the midfield area as usual, while experienced central defensive pair Mapi León and Irene Paredes will be tasked with keeping the Real Madrid attack at bay.
