Real Madrid vs Barcelona remaining games: who has the tougher road to LaLiga title?

With the March international break in the rearview mirror, the European club season entered its decisive stretch. In Spain’s LaLiga, there are now just eight games remaining, and the title race continues to be a heavyweight battle between the big two, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Barcelona held a four-point edge heading into the post-FIFA weekend and the match-ups suggested it was likely to be even tighter by the end of it. But, as it turned out, Hansi Flick’s side snatched a massive three points away at their Champions League quarter-final opponents Atlético Madrid, while Los Blancos slipped up against relegation-threatened Mallorca, a matchup they were expected to handle with relative ease. That left the Catalans seven points ahead.

A Clásico that could decide everything

The second league meeting between the rivals looms large. El Clásico is set for Matchweek 35 at Spotify Camp Nou, just three rounds before the season ends.

Barcelona will hope to enter that showdown with a chance to clinch the title on home turf. Madrid, meanwhile, may view it as their last opportunity to flip the standings, assuming the race is still alive by then.

Who has the tougher run-in?

On paper, Barcelona faced the more demanding schedule coming into the weekend. The average league position of their remaining opponents is 8.2, compared to 12 for Real Madrid.

Both teams had five away games left, and those are relatively similar in difficulty. But the gap appears in home fixtures. Madrid’s remaining opponents at the Santiago Bernabéu average a league position of 14.5. Barcelona’s remaining home opponents, including Madrid, average 6th place, a significantly higher level of competition.

Barcelona’s perfect home record changes the equation

That statistical edge comes with an important caveat. Barcelona have been flawless at home this season, regardless of venue. Between the Estadi Johan Cruyff, Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, and Spotify Camp Nou, they have won all 15 LaLiga home games.

That perfect record suggests Barcelona will not be intimidated by the tougher slate. If anything, it reinforces their confidence heading into the final stretch, no matter how high the stakes become.
