Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich: UCL preview
It is the most frequent matchup in European Cup history: in the 70 years since the continent’s elite club competition began, Madrid and Bayern have met 28 times in the tournament. Madrid, who are chasing a record-extending 16th European title, have won 13 of the teams’ meetings; Bayern, six-time kings of the Old Continent, have won 11.
Significantly, Madrid have held the upper hand over Bayern in recent knockout-stage encounters. Indeed, Los Blancos have prevailed in the clubs’ last four two-legged ties in the Champions League - and have gone on to win the trophy on each occasion. The Germans have not eliminated Madrid from the tournament’s knockout stages since 2012.
However, Bayern head to Spain in better form than their hosts. On Saturday, a 3-2 comeback win over Freiburg maintained the Bavarians’ nine-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga, and extended their unbeaten run to 13 games in all competitions. Madrid, on the other hand, fell to a 2-1 defeat at Real Mallorca at the weekend, as Álvaro Arbeloa’s men slipped seven points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona.
The winner of Madrid and Bayern’s quarterfinal tie, whose second leg is in Germany on April 15, will face either Liverpool or Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals.
