Joe
Vini Jr is the player to watch. Always.
He's the easy pick, I know. But it's never a bad choice to keep your eye on him.
Carlo Ancelotti post-game:
The first minutes we weren't well organised, after that we were.
We're ready to fight in the next leg.
It's a quarter-final, we managed it well. The game was good, as well as the result.
I think we could have done better in the final third in the first half, when we had total control.
We started with only 3 players at the back and we needed more, the full-backs had to defend more. But we fixed it after 10 minutes.
These are games where Kroos and Modric have the experience to manage the situations.
We have to fight and suffer in the next game.
Say it after me... Vin-ze-ma!
Fair play to the Madrid social media team, they're really pushing the Vinzema thing. I'm not convinced, but as long as they keep up their incredible performances for us all to enjoy, who cares?
Vinicius Jr, post-match thoughts:
We played really well today. It was one of the best games we played this season.
There is still the second leg to go, we need cool heads.
We had a lot of chances, but we played against a good team.
Everyone who wears this shirt knows playing in the Champions League is special. To play in Madrid, you have to want to play these games.
I train with my personal trainer to be able to arrive at this point of the season in form.
Sofascore's full-time conclusions:
Chelsea had an early splurge of life at the start of the second half, but apart from that, it was all Madrid.
A fantastically professional performance from Real Madrid, who rose through various stages of a game that got quite topsy-turvy at times.
Carlo Ancelotti's side go to Stamford Bridge with a huge advantage after that game, that became virtually one-sided after the red card for Chilwell.
Even with the missed chances and the ones that they wasted through poor decision making, the amount of quality opportunities they created will given them a lot of confidence for the second leg.
The substitues all did their job, and Asensio, apart from the goal, was fantastic when he came on the pitch.
And the referee ends the game at the Santiago Bernabéu!
We're into the last minute of the game...
CHANCE FOR CHELSEA!
Rüdiger gets a huge cheer as he makes as vital block on a Mount effort from close range. Militão slipped inside the box and the midfielder spun with the ball, but Rüdiger threw himself in front of the shot.
Alaba was played down the line by Ceballos and the defender swung a cross that Kepa hit out to Benzema, who couldn't react quickly enough and headed over the bar from close range.
KARIM BENZEMA OVER THE BAR!
5 added minutes.
Carlo Ancelotti, as cool as you like, flicks the ball up as it comes flying towards him and pulls off some silky skills ,to the delight of the crowd.
Asensio is too slow on the ball to take advantage of a potential break from an Alaba long ball.
Chelsea scramble back and find their defensive shape.
The ball goes out of play behind the advertising board and Gallagher can't find it. It's the round thing, Conor.
Cucurella comes and shows him. All is OK.
Carvajal is booked for reacting badly to a Cucurella challenge that he deemed unfair.
Vinicius breaks down the middle, but shoots instead of playing left to Benzema, who was free and in acres of space. A wasted chance, but, as Spiderman says, everybody gets one.
Kroos OFF
Tchouaméni ON
With 8 minutes of normal time to go, Chelsea decide to attack. Militão sticks an arm out on Cucurella who goes to ground, and the defender is booked.
I can't wait to hear Lampard's thoughts on how he's handled this game. Because I have no idea.
Modric OFF
Ceballos ON
Chelsea do well to work the ball out of their box and ride a thousand Madrid challenges.
Enter, Antonio Rüdiger. The German comes crashing in like a runaway train and clears the ball away before the away side can think about going any closer to Courtois' goal.
The free-kick was played quickly to Asensio, who whacked a low drive just wide from the right side.
ASENSIO HITS WIDE FROM DISTANCE
Mount goes in late on Carvajal as the right-back is facing away from goal. A nasty one in the shin. Orange card, for me, that.
Luke Modric is having a great time out there, he is dictating everything.
I was typing as the goal went in that Chelsea are sitting in a 5-4-1 and Madrid were playing the ball from left to right and back again.
That seemed like the plan for the next 15 minutes, until Asensio went and smacked one in the net.
Kanté and Silva OFF
Mount and Gallagher ON
A Madrid corner is played quickly to Vini inside the box, with Chelsea sleeping.
The winger passes the ball to Asensio on the edge of the box and he hits a low drive past Kepa from distance.
The stadium erupts.
Alaba is at left-back; Rüdiger and Militão is the new centre-back pairing.
Rodrygo and Camavinga OFF
Asensio and Rüdiger ON
Asensio is about to come on for Madrid...
A couple of close calls for Chelsea as Madrid move their passing web up five yards, allowing Modric and Rodrygo to combine inside the box. Kepa sweeps up.
Los Blancos continue to move the ball from left to right and back again, probing, searching for the gaps in the Chelsea block.
This is a new test for Madrid: to break down Chelsea's block. The Blues have grouped together and look to be playing for damage limitation.
Beware of the counter attacks...
JoãoFélix and Sterling OFF
Havertz and Chalobah ON
James slips and lets Vini Jr in behind. The winger runs inside and plays a reverse pass to Camavinga down the left, who hits over.
CAMAVINGA FIRES OVER
Rodrygo takes a hit to the face but the referee waves for play to continue. Again, there is no structure to the game, it's just half-attacks from both sides.
Havertz is warming up. Interesante.
Is Lampard going for broke already?
Chelsea's next move will be interesting: they have used their sub-left-back to cover the absence of a centre-back. Chess game time.
KEPA SAVES ALABA'S LOW SHOT TO THE FAR POST
Alaba to take...
Madrid have a very dangerous free-kick, on the right of the box.
A ball over the top caused Chelsea all sorts of problems and he grabbed Rodrygo's shirt on the edge of the box. Straight red, no complaints.
RED CARD!
CHILWELL IS OFF!
He brought down Rodrygo when the Brazilian was the last man!
Madrid decide to take advantage of the spaces with Rodrygo, who gets his decision wrong and tries to play Benzema in through the lines instead of shooting as the Chelsea defenders back away.
The game has suddenly opened up again; Enzo has been able to play a couple of long-range passes over the past few minutes, changing the direction of Chelsea's play.
And we're back underway... Koulibaly is holding his hamstring on the bench.
Change confirmed for Chelsea:
Koulibaly OFF
Cucurella ON
Cucurella is coming on for the defender.
Koulibaly is down... he looks to have pulled a muscle in his race with Rodrygo.
Silva is quick to react after Camavinga plays a pass over the top to Benzema. The Frenchman tries to hit the ball with his first touch, but Silva had followed him and smothered the effort.
Vinicius, again, burns past James on the left and plays a perfect pass to Benzema on the edge of the box.
The striker pays the ball off to Modric, who opens his body on the left side of the box and curls a ferocious effort over the crossbar.
MODRIC CURLS A SHOT JUST OVER THE BAR!
Koulibaly defends excellently well against Rodrygo after a Courtois long ball flies over the Chelsea defence and is chased down by the Brazilian.
Rodrygo looked for a second to be in a potential 1vs1 with Kepa, but Koulibaly raced back to stop the danger.
Courtois saves a Félix shot after the Portuguese is practically given the ball by Carvajal inside the box. More sloppy passes.
Chelsea counter with Sterling after a poor Benzema pass is cut out, but Madrid get back well.
A few loose balls from both sides in the opening minute...
And we're off!
Madrid get the second half going.
No changes as of yet.
The players are in the tunnel now, ready to come out for the second half.
Karim 'The Dream' loves scoring against English teams
And, given the form he's in, I wouldn't bet against him bagging another one tonight.

Sofascore says Madrid were super-dominant
That's true, although we did see Chelsea with some clear chances to equalise...
Like I said earlier, that half of football was like trying to hold a centipede: it was frantic, exciting, slightly terrifying at times and caused me to scream just a bit too much.
Real Madrid cam flying out of the blocks and put Chelsea under all sorts of pressure, but the chances came for the away side on the break.
As things settled down (sort of), Madrid began to create clearer chances, and the goal came from one of these, with a spectacular pass from Carvajal that was lofted over the top of the Chelsea defence.
Vini made the move but Benzema got his name on the scoresheet with a tap-in. Chelsea still tried to press, getting in behind Camavinga now and again, but Courtois was there when needed.
It's a positive result from Madrid, but maybe they need to be slightly more wary of the threats Chelsea pose.
No added time - that's all for now!
CHANCE!
Fede Valverde wins the ball from Fofana and burns away from the defenders.
He has Rodrygo to his left, Benzema to his right, but shoots and Kepa saves.
Madrid come close as Benzema is found down the wing by Carvajal from a throw in. He challenges Thiago Silva who goes to ground like a bag of potatoes.
The Bernabéu crowd aren't happy as the Frenchman had already played a square pass to Vinicius on his own in the box.
The referee gives a foul.
Vinicius gets away on the break (again) but this time he rushes his cross instead of taking on the defender and it flies high and out of play.
Stick to ruining the lives of defenders, Vini, it's better for everyone.
Modric whips a dangerous cross in and Vini Jr gets a head on the ball, almost catching Kepa off guard. Luckily for the goalkeeper, he reads the shot well and gets down to stop Benzema from scoring what would have been a tap-in.
MASSIVE CHANCE FOR MADRID
Thiago Silva makes a vital interception from a Vinicius cross as the winger breaks away. Benzema was sniffing around...
Vini Jr, Rodrygo and Benzema link up on the counter after Reece James had hit a cross into Courtois' hands.
The trio criss-cross like synchronised jet fighters before Chelsea somehow scramble the ball away for a corner.
Benzema hits a weak shot from the edge of the box that Kepa saves easily. Another good recovery from the high press of Los Blancos.
The Brazilian takes a Benzema pass on perfectly that is fired into him like a bullet.
He sweeps the touch past Silva and smacks a low shot into Kepa's frame from a tight angle on the right side of the Chelsea box.
RODRYGO WITH A GREAT CHANCE TO SCORE!
A nice moment from Rodrygo, who, with Thiago Silva, jumps over Kepa after he collects a wayward Carvajal pass.
The Madrid winger turns around to walk away before realising it is his national team captain on the floor, and he helps him up.
Madrid are attacking and the Bernabéu crowd are right behind them.
Camavinga tries a lofted pass, similar to that from Carvajal for the first goal, but Kepa reads the arc of the ball and collects before Benzema can do damage.
This game is like trying to hold a caffeine-filled centipede. Legs are scrambling everywhere and I don't know where to look.
The Blues are pushing so many players forward, which is leaving lovely spaces for Madrid's wingers and full-backs to attack. Dangerous play from them.
Chelsea go close with Koulibaly, who breezes through a gap in the Madrid midfield before trying to find Sterling in the box, but his pass goes astray.
This game has exploded. In football, this normally happens on about 75 minutes. Not at the Bernabéu.
Vinicius broke away down the left and took Fofana for a ride from 40 yards out right to the byline, where he skipped past him and hit a curling shot that was cleared off the line by Thiago Silva.
WHAT A CHANCE FOR VINICIUS!!
OFF THE LINE BY SILVA
Chelsea attack instantly:
Kanté plays wide to James who crosses towards Sterling. The ex-Liverpool player is just yards away from goal and his shot is low, hard and going in - until Courtois somehow gets his huge frame down to stop it!
WHAT A SAVE FROM COURTOIS
Perfect from Real Madrid: Carvajal played a wonderful pass over the top of the Chelsea defence to Vinicius who had broken in behind.
The Brazilian, instead of shooting, tapped the ball to his right where Benzema was waiting to tap in!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
BENZEMA OPENS THE SCORING AT THE BERNABÉU
Real Madrid have changed their plan over the past few minutes and appear content to keep the ball away from the opponents.
We're twenty minutes in and no goals to speak of just yet...
Luka Modric presses like he's 18-years-old. How does he do it?
The ball fell to the Uruguayan on the edge of the box and he fired a rocket that zipped over Kepa's goal.
FEDE FIRES OVER THE BAR!
Vini Jr goes down in the box... nothing given.
Rodrygo receives the ball on the turn 18 yards from goal and tries to play a difficult ball over the Chelsea defence that Kepa comes to collect. More positive possession from Los Blancos.
Militão recovers the ball brilliantly and possession is worked left to Vinicius, who wins a corner for the home side.
This is more positive from Ancelotti's team.
Benzema and Vinicius Jr link up wonderfully inside the Chelsea box, and the Frenchman gets down the left side before striking a powerful effort into Kepa's hands from a tight angle.
CHANCE FOR MADRID!
Benzema has Madrid's first shot of the night.
He plays a fast one-two with Carvajal on the edge of the box before hitting a shot that's blocked.
Sterling brings down Militão as the two challenge for a header inside Madrid's area. Chelsea, with some smooth possession, were allowed to advance to the edge of the opposition box with little trouble...
Madrid are dominating in the sense that they have had more of the ball, but their silly mistakes and and cheap losses of possession are giving Chelsea huge opportunities to strike on the counter, which, with João and Sterling up front, is a sensible plan.
Camavinga is booked for a foul on Sterling as the winger looked to get into Madrid's box.
The away side are making lots of recoveries in their own third before bursting forward. And it's working excellently well so far.
And it's a booking for Fofana! The Brazilian skipped past the centre-back and was tripped up on halfway.
Vinicius is brought down by Fofana...
CHELSEA CLOSE AGAIN!
Chelsea attack in exactly the same way as before: this time it's Modric who loses the ball.
Kanté skips past Kroos and Félix hits a cross to the far post that is cleared away.
Chelsea recover the ball and break with Félix, who races away from the halfway line, past Militão before firing a low shot that is saved by Courtois.
HUGE CHANCE FOR CHELSEA!!!
It is an incredibly intense start from Ancelotti's side...
The home side immediately win the ball back and begin to pop it around the Chelsea midfield.
Rodrygo makes it into the box with the ball but gets tackled before he can create danger.
Madrid have come flying out of the blocks with a high press on Chelsea...
And we're off at the Santiago Bernabéu!
Real Madrid are in all white; Chelsea, in all blue.
The away side kick us off from right to left.
A reminder of the XIs:

The warmups have finished and the players are headed down the tunnel for the final team talks! Ten minutes to go!
Frank Lampard pre-game quotes:
It's going to be difficult for us agianst Madrid, for sure.
Thiago is back which is massive for us. And we have Sterling, Mudryk, Kai, we have options up front.
We worked on the training ground yesterday. We can't do anything too physical because we've got too many games. It's more about positions and defences. You have to be on top of your game defensively, that's obvious.
[Getting the job] was amazing for me. A big surprise. It happened the day after the Liverpool game, pretty quickly. It was an easy decision for me. I've been here before as a coach so it was a transition that worked for me better than it would for others.
The warmups have started...
And the crowd are certainly happy to see their superstars step out onto the pitch for another European fixture!
Carlo talks about whether experience will be key to the tie:
I think for all all of the experience I have built up - not through luck, simply for the length of time I’ve been doing this, I’m 63, he’s 44, won’t have any bearing on tomorrow’s game.
Lampard was a brilliant player, who I was lucky enough to coach for two seasons - a fantastic professional.
He knows very well what can happen in these games and he will be preparing his team for it.
In this case, I don’t think experience will be a factor. He only returned to Chelsea last week, there are many players that he already knows, I’m sure he will do well during his time at Chelsea.
A reminder of the starting XIs:
Real Madrid:
Courtois; Carvajal, Militão, Alaba, Camavinga; Kroos, Valverde, Modric; Rodrygo, Benzema, Vini Jr
Chelsea:
Kepa; Fofana, Silva, Koulibaly; James, Kovacic, Kanté, Enzo, Chilwell; Sterling, Félix
The Bernabéu is filling up...
The fans are slowly making their way into the stadium as we approach kick-off, which is just over 30 minutes away!
Sofascore pre-game stats:
Here's all the Sofascore numbers for you to drool over. Just me?
Real Madrid vs Chelsea is not the only big hitter we've got tonight: AC Milan take on Napoli in a Serie A flavoured quarter-final tie.
Kieran's got that game covered so make sure you check out what's going on at San Siro!
Carlo Ancelotti pre-game:
How different is it to play the first leg at home?
It’s a different way of thinking, a different approach but as I say, we have to make the most of the fact that we are playing the first leg at home and try and gain an advantage for the second game which will be the decisive game.
Usually, I think the team plays well home and away - there was only one game last season, the first leg against Paris Saint-Germain where we didn’t play well. But in the rest, we did well over both legs and we deserved to win the Champions League. Because the team that deserves to win, usually does.
Were Chelsea the toughest team you faced last season?
We really suffered when we met last season, no doubt about it. For different circumstances, they had a substantial lead when they came here and we were given a tough time. We have to respect this team, and Chelsea as a club because it is a top level club.
They have some very good players - they’re not in their best moment but in these kinds of games, teams that are not in form are more motivated. It will bring out the best of them. For the individual players Chelsea have in their squad, they are a top level side.
Only an hour to go!
Real Madrid's dressing room is ready for the game. As usual, Los Blancos will be in their - you guessed it - all-white kit for potentially another magical night at the Bernabéu...
Here's the official confirmation of Chelsea's XI:
What are your thoughts? Is this enough for them to get past the reigning champions?
So, Frank's at the wheel of the multi-million Chelsea machine: but would he be the first interim manager ever to win Europe's biggest prize?
Or does history actually favour the temporary Blues boss?
Thiago starts for The Blues:
Madrid have scored in their last 30 knockout games in the UEFA Champions League; Silva is back from injury and makes Lampard's starting XI: will he be able to keep them out today?
Chelsea starting XI:
Our colleague Aritz Gabilondo has the Chelsea starting XI for you:
Kepa
Fofana - Thiago Silva - Koulibaly
James - Kanté - Enzo - Kovacic - Chilwell
João Félix - Sterling
Chelsea arrive at the Bernbaéu...
Serious faces all round from Lampard's side who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 1-0 loss to Wolves in the Premier League last weekend. Perhaps the new-manager bounce effect begins today.
Over 100 votes so far...
And it's a pretty overwhelming outcome, with more than 70% backing a home win!
Head over to @English_AS and have your say.
Frank is back!
Frank Lampard will be the third Chelsea manager to take charge of the club in this season’s Champions League, after Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.
Will he be able to conjure up some Chelsea magic? He certainly knows the club, and the training ground, and the stadium, just like he said.
In 2021, back when Frank was manager for the first time, he went out of the Champions League with Chelsea in the round of 16, after losing 7-1 to Bayern Munich over two legs.
A battle of the heavyweights...
Chelsea have only lost one of seven against Madrid in European competition, yet Real Madrid have lost just one of their last 10 in the Champions League.
It's a huge night ahead...
What a couple of fixtures we've got today, and they come as a lovely second course to the high levels of drama we saw last night!
Round three for Chelsea (and Madrid, but that doesn't rhyme):
Chelsea and Real Madrid play each other for the third consecutive year: Chelsea won in the semi-finals in 20/21 and became champions; Real Madrid won in the quarter-finals in 21/22 and became champions.
We don't have Chelsea's team news from Frank Lampard just yet, but here's the prediction given al the injuries that the team has had to face.
Ancelotti repeats the Camp Nou XI:
Courtois
Carvajal - Militão - Alaba - Camavinga
Fede - Modric - Kroos
Rodrygo - Benzema - Vini Jr
Here's the full story of Boehly's bold mouth, who thinks Chelsea are going to send Madrid to the cleaners. They might, you never know...
The stage is set for Chelsea...
Who's owner said just this afternoon that they're going to win 0-3! Talk about confident!
How they got here: Real Madrid
Real Madrid stormed through their group that consisted of Celtic, Shakhtar and Leipzig, coming top with 13 points out of a possible 18. In the next round, they comfortably swept aside Liverpool at the Santiago Bernabéu after a crazy game at Anfield saw them pick up a fantastic 2-5 win.
Who to watch: Vini Jr
The Brazilian winger is Real Madrid’s top scorer this season in Europe with 6 goals, and looks to evolve slightly every game into a more complete winger.
The days of Vini missing sitters are gone: he is making a real impact on Real Madrid this season and already has 21 goals and 15 assists.
The 22-year-old comes into the game in terrific form: he has either scored or assisted in his last 4 league games and has only failed to so the same in just one Champions League match this season.
Team news: Chelsea
N´Golo Kanté, Mason Mount and Thiago Silva are all available for Thomas Tu- sorry… Graham Pott- sorry… Frank Lampard today. César Azpilicueta is in the squad but is not certain to start, while Broja is the only major player missing.
Team news: Real Madrid
Ferland Mendy is the only long-term absentee in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the game. The XI is expected to be similar to the one he used against FC Barcelona in the Copa del Rey, with Camavinga at left-back.
Welcome!
Hello! It’s one of those fantastic weeks, the best weeks of the year, where it feels like the football never stops.
Today, topping the drama we saw yesterday, we’ve got Real Madrid vs Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-finals!
It’s Joe here to talk you through all the ups, downs and crazy happenings that normally occur when the famous starball is kicked on the Santiago Bernabéu pitch.
