Real Madrid striker Álvaro Rodríguez will not play at the Under-20 World Cup with Uruguay after his team’s refusal to loan the player out. The news was confirmed this Wednesday to EFE by a source from the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) who indicated that the Spanish team officially notified that they will not allow the player to leave.

Born 18 years ago in the Catalan city of Palamós, the attacker arrived at Real Madrid in 2020 as a member of their youth ranks and is currently playing for Castilla, led by Raúl González, who are fighting for promotion to the second division.

Ancelotti has praised Álvaro this season

Álvaro made his first team debut this season in a Copa del Rey game and also came off the bench for several matches in LaLiga. One of those was the Madrid derby, played on February 25, in which the number 39 scored an 85th minute equaliser for Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

In fact, the Italian coach spoke highly of Álvaro some time ago and underlined his plans for the future: “Next season he will be in the first team squad because he has a quality that few at his age have. He possesses significant height, he is a powerful player, he shoots well with his head, he moves the ball well” Ancelotti eulogised.

Uruguay release a statement regarding the decision

A statement posted online from the AUF read: We would like to inform that, due to a decision taken by his club, Álvaro Rodríguez will not form part of the squad for the under-20 World Cup in Argentina. Despite the effort from the Uruguayan Football Association, we will not be able to count on the services of the player who had been called up by manager Marcelo Broli for the U-20 Uruguayan National Team.” Meanwhile, the Uruguay squad continues with their training camp for the World Cup with 24 players under Marcelo Broli’s orders.
