Real Madrid’s starting lineup against Real Betis in LaLiga: Mbappé out
The champions return to the Bernabéu needing a win to stay in touch at the top, but Xabi Alonso must reshuffle his attack and defense for the opener.

Real Madrid begin 2026 at the Santiago Bernabéu against Betis in a game they must win to keep the pressure on Barcelona in the title race, after surrendering the league lead following a run of costly slip-ups. For this opener, Xabi Alonso faces a significant setback: Kylian Mbappé will not be available.
The French forward is dealing with a knee sprain and has been playing through pain for some time. Doctors have now advised him to stop to avoid aggravating the injury, ruling him out against Betis. It remains unclear whether he will be fit for the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, or in what condition he might return. For now, Madrid’s attack will revolve around Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo, with Jude Bellingham operating in the advanced midfield role from which he scored so freely two seasons ago. Following Endrick’s move to Lyon, Gonzalo is the bench option should the game require a spark.

There are no doubts in goal: Thibaut Courtois starts, as usual. In defense, however, Alonso faces another complication on top of the confirmed absences of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Éder Militão. Dean Huijsen did not train on the eve of the game and, although he could be included in the squad, it is unlikely he will start or even see minutes. Dani Carvajal has recovered but is expected to be eased back to avoid muscular issues, meaning the back line should consist of Federico Valverde, Raúl Asencio, Antonio Rüdiger and Álvaro Carreras.
In midfield, Bellingham will be joined by Aurélien Tchouaméni, Arda Güler and Eduardo Camavinga, with Valverde’s shift to right back leaving a vacancy in the center of the pitch.
All told, the likely Real Madrid lineup against Betis is: Courtois; Valverde, Asencio, Rüdiger, Carreras; Tchouaméni, Güler, Camavinga, Bellingham; Rodrygo and Vinícius.
