Referee Fernando Hernández hit with 12-game ban for kneeing player
The ref received one of the harshest punishments after kneeing León’s Lucas Romero during the weekend game against América.
Fernando Hernández now knows the punishment he must serve after being found guilty of breaching FMF rules for kneeing player Lucas Romero during last weekend’s match between América and León. On Tuesday, the Disciplinary Commission announced that the referee will be suspended for 12 games, in accordance with the FMF Sanctions Regulations.
Through a statement published on their social media feed, the FMF announced the sanction for Hernández. It read: “Mr. Fernando Hernández Gómez, central referee of the match, is penalized by the Disciplinary Commission with a 12-match suspension, for violating Article 30 paragraph g) of the FMF Sanctions Regulations, by engaging in violent conduct against a player”.
The 39-year-old match official, who has been a professional referee for 20 years, will miss the remainder of the 2023 Clausura and part of the 2023 Apertura which get underway in the summer.
Romero also served a ban
The FMF also announced that Lucas Romero has been served a two-game suspension for “violating the principles of sportsmanship and Fair Play” through his actions against the match official, as stipulated in article 18 paragraph b) of the FMF Sanctions Regulations.
FMF warning
Finally, the FMF warned América and León that in the event that this type of conduct is ever repeated, the Disciplinary Commission “may impose more severe sanctions against them”.
