Relegation for Tottenham: This is the nightmare for the Spurs’ economy if they don’t stay in the Premier League
Tottenham have a massive Monday night match against Leeds United tonight as they look to avoid what would be a catastrophic and expensive relegation.

It seemed unthinkable at the beginning of the season but Tottenham are staring down the barrel of what would be a disastrous relegation. The sporting ramifications would be devastating, but the financial implications could cripple the club.
Sink or swim for Spurs
In the last 12 months Tottenham has gone from winning the Europa League to spiraling down the Premier League standings in a historically bad season. In that time they have had four different coaches patrolling the touchline while the fans have turned on the club and the owners. If Spurs aren’t able to stay in the English top flight they will be playing in The Championship in the their recently opened, £1 billion stadium.
That cutting edge stadium will be awfully hard to pay off considering the drop in revenue that Spurs will suffer if they are to fail to survive the relegation race. Should they have to drop to the second division it would be a hit that could cost the club about £145 million in just one season according to financial soccer expert Stefan Borson.
“It’s that double whammy of not just relegation but no also UEFA revenue next season. You’re going to lose £100 million on UEFA, you’re going to lose 75 million on the domestic. Two hundred million quid in one year, the current year of broadcast is at £200 million. That’s going to drop down to £55 (million). That’s a loss of £145 million,” claims Borson.
De Zerbi turning tides with Tottenham
The good news is Tottenham is currently sitting above the relegation zone after their away victory at Villa Park last week. Since then, West Ham lost to league leaders Arsenal on Sunday afternoon from London Stadium. That puts Spurs in a position to take a four point lead into the final two match days of the season should they beat Leeds tonight.
For the first time in a long time Tottenham have put a string of matches together that have seen them stop sliding down the table. That can be attributed to Roberto De Zerbi who was appointed as the third Spurs managers since the start of the season. Since he came to town Spurs have picked up seven of a possible 12 points and have climbed out of the relegation zone.
With Wolverhampton and Burley already relegated, it’s just down to West Ham and Tottenham for the final spot in the relegation battle. Tottenham have Leeds first, and then travel to Stamford Bridge before a home match against Everton to close out the season. West Ham have an away match against Newcastle before they close out the season at home against Leeds.
